Maatraan inching closer to Endhiran?

If trade sources are to be believed, production company AGS is well on its way to sell the domestic rights of Maatraan for a whopping Rs. 80 Crores. With the overseas and Telugu rights already sold for Rs. 12 and 17 crores respectively, it's time to talk business in the domestic front. If the Rs. 80 crores news is true, Maatraan will become the first movie to inch close to Endhiran, which did a business of Rs. 100 crores.

K V Anand has already become a bankable director what with his two films Ayan and Ko reaping commercial success in quick succession. Maatraan is shot in Russia and will have Suriya, Kajal Aggarwal playing lead roles.

Karthika says that she has never demanded excessive salary

Karthika while speaking to the media said, "There is a question that why I am not acting in Tamil films after a great success. My mother is listening to lots of stories. She only knows which role will suit me. That is the reason for the delay.

In between I got an opportunity to act in a Telugu film which Junior NTR in the lead role. There are also rumours that I am demanding more salary and that is the reason that I am not getting offers. Can anyone prove that whether I have demanded excess salary? But will anyone act without asking about the salary.
The directors know that what they should pay me. I have never demanded excess salary. Earning money is not my criteria. I am getting offers in Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada. The reason for this is Ko’s success. I am also interested to act in Hindi films. We will wait and see. Some big hero might call me. There was news recently that my sister Thulasi is also going to act in the films. There is no truth in that news. She is studying 9th standard only. But she is going to definitely act. My mother will make an announcement regarding this. There is more time for this to happen."

GV Prakash tunes in for 'Karikalan'

And, it is official! GV Prakash Kumar will be composing the tunes for Vikram's period film, 'Karikalan'. While a number of names right from Yuvan Shankar Raja, Vijay Antony to Harris Jayaraj were rumoured to be music composers for this film, it is now official that GV Prakash will compose the tunes.
In fact, a leading daily has reported that GV Prakash has 'silently' begun working on the tunes of this film.
The movie will throw light on Karikalacholan, the man who built the first dam against all odds in India. The music will be composed with instruments which were used back then, which is quite a challenging affair by itself.
'Karikalan' directed by LI Kannan will be produced under the banner of Silver Line Films, N Karthik will handle the cinematography whilst TS Suresh is the editor. Vikram will woo three damsels in this project, Zarine Khan, Mithra Kurian and Radhika Apte.
It may be mentioned that GV Prakash is also composing the music of the Vikram - AL Vijay project.

'Kanchana' goes to Kannada

'Kanchana' is going places, literally. Rama Narayanan, who produced the Lawrence Raghavendra film in Tamil, is planning to remake it in Kannada. The veteran has confirmed that plans are also on to start the Hindi version of the eerie-comedy thriller soon.
"I had directed as many as 15 films in Kannada so far. Hence I have decided to produce and direct Kanchana in Sandalwood. Upendra is playing the lead role, while Lakshmi Rai is repeating what she did in Tamil," says the former president of Tamil Film Producers Council.
Uma Shree has been roped in to play Kovai Sarala's role, while Devadharshini will be replaced by Shruthi. It is said that the transgender character played by Sarath Kumar in the Tamil original will be done in Kannada by a popular actor there.
"Kanchana is a great success in both Tamil and Telugu. So Rama Narayanan wants to continue the success journey in other languages too. He will play a crucial role in the movie's Hindi remake also," sources say. Besides playing the lead role, Lawrence Raghavendra wielded the megaphone for the Tamil version.

Simbhu's Director Doubles Up for Dhanush's Title

V.Z. Durai has been known for his style of attempting with different genre of movies. His debut directorial ‘Mugavari’ is still regarded as a good family entertainer. His other films ‘Thotti Jaya’ and ‘Nepali’ weren’t commercially successful, but proved to be an impressive show. The director is now making his comeback in Tamil film industry through the film ‘6’ starring Sham and Poonam Kaur in lead roles.

Acting workshops aren’t common in Kollywood and very few actors and filmmakers do take up this phase seriously. Say for instance Kamal Haasan has been ritually sticking to this practice from the days of ‘Virumaandi’. Now the entire crew of ‘6’ is working on the same pattern. Throwing few lights upon the film, Shaam says, “The script traverses through the life of a child and the rehearsals is so much helpful to us. It fills us with more confidence and even the complicated scenes are done with an ease. We are so much thankful to that director.”

Mani Ratnam okays Karthik’s son

For the ace director Mani Ratnam, hunt for heroes and equal scripts always has been a daunting task. If this not happened, then we would not have got Maddy, Siddharth, a la for Tamil movies. His penchant for perfection is ever coming to the foray whenever he involves in a new project. This was the case with his Roja when he introduced AR Rahman to the music world. His last venture Raavanan yielded no less rewards but has not deterred his mission for next movie. For quite some time he was on the mindset to score with Ponniyin Selvan but could not for reasons unknown.
More than 20 years ago he worked with Navarasa Nayagan Karthik in Mouna Ragam and Agni Natchathiram. These films marked new phenomenon for both Mani and Karthik. Now the same Mani Ratnam is embedding on the current generation face, from Karthik’s blood. Yes, Mani had the screen test for Karthik’s son Gautham ( remember the name of Karthik in Agninatchathiram). The session went off well with full satisfaction for Mani Ratnam. He felt the face ideal for the script he has in his mind. According to the close sources of the director, the story may evolve from a love angle to be depicted in all new horizons. It is believed that writer Jeyamohan impressed the director with a story and both have made a consensus on the project.
Other cast is to be decided in coming days probably from the artist family like Kamal (Akshara) who is currently assisting her dad in Viswaroopam. Other probable faces are Keerthana ( the girl who scored impression in Mani’s Kannathil Mutthamittal), daughter of Vithagan Parthiban & Actor Radha‘s second daughter. However as per the latest reports, talks with none of the celebrity daughters went fruitful and Maniratnam is still searching for the apt new face for this project.

Suriya Breaks His Own Record Now

The most loved child of Box Office Suriya keeps striking the victorious chords. His Diwali release ‘Ezham Arivu’ has taken a huge opening across all the centres and is now crowned as the year’s blockbuster. The trade analysts have now reported that last year Suriya’s ‘Singam’ was a superb hit as it spanned whooping amount of profit for the producers.

Now Suriya has broken his own records as his ‘Ezham Arivu’ has created a record of gaining big collections within a week after its release.

The film had kept everyone high on expectations right from the beginning and it has exceeded the anticipations.

No Rajini getup for Vijay!

Speculations that Vijay is appearing in a song donning up as Rajini and Kamal in Nanban seem to be unsubstantiated. A source close to director Shankar denied such scenes saying that there is no basis for such rumors.

However, it's true that the film's lead Vijay and Ileana are appearing in four different garbs presumably as a tribute to the famous film stars in the industry. But we will only get to know about that when the movie releases.

Why is Hansika not celebrating Velayudham's victory?

While Velayutham emerged as a winner in the two-movie Diwali race, the cast and crew have reasons to celebrate. However, one of the female leads of the movie Hanshika Motwani is lying low and not partaking in celebrations, as it were.

She says she is currently busy preparing for her exams to be held in London soon. "Right now, I am focusing on my studies and my celebrations will start after my exams are over," she was quoted as saying.

Two National Award winners team up!

Bala is teaming up with Editor Kishore Te for his next film. The national award winning editor says that it is an honor to work with Bala, a veteran in his profession. The film, which remains untitled till now, has Adharva playing the lead role. Bala has three heroines in mind to play Adharva’s onscreen pair but has finalized none till now.
Cameraman Chezhiyan, who had wielded the camera for Then Merkku Paruvakatru, which fetched Saranya Ponvannan the Naitonal Award, will handle the camera for this flick.

Mrs Dhanush looks for pongal release

Aishwarya Dhanush, who is donning the hat of a director with her home production 3 is looking to release the movie for Pongal. The film is produced by Kasthuri Raja and is also Shruti Haasan's second Tamil film after 7aum Arivu. Interestingly, Shruti is also said to be involved with Aishwarya while writing the script of the movie.

While most of the shoots are over, Aishwarya is looking to tweak a few already shot sequences and the post-production will also start soon. 3's tunes are scored by debut musician Anirudh.

Vijay’s Velayudham Wins this Diwali

Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s Velayudham which came out with very low expectations actually shined this diwali.

Reasons behind this team’s success are very few. The first reason is everyone’s eyes saw a Simple and Smart Vijay in this film. After Kaavalan, the actor seems to have chosen the right path it seems. His Portrayal was Believable; the stunts in this film are not lengthy and overdosed (except for a very few scenes).
Need to specially mention about the director of the film M.Raja, whose previous film was a disappointment. But he took care in shaping out Velayudham well and that’s the secret of success. Another highlight was Vijay Antony’s catchy music.
Also as usually Santhanam maintains the pulse of the audience. Even thou Promotions for the movie is less when compared to the other diwali releases, Velayudham emerges as the Silent Winner.
With good movies lined up, Vijay’s career seems to Rise to the Next Level.

Manorama’s surgery successful

Tamil comedienne Manorama underwent a successful surgery for removal of a bloodclot on her head at Apollo hospital in Chennai on Tuesday (November 1).
She is said to have regained ‘consciousness’, though she is still on life support system.

Manorama’s son Bhoopathy said after the operation: “ Her vital parameters are normal, but she is still on ventilator support due to lung congestion.”
The family and hospital authorities have requested the film industry people to avoid meeting the actor. Those who visited her on the day she was admitted include Kamal Haasan, Anushka and Senthil.

Anjali selected by Murugadoss again

AR Murugadoss was very happy with Anjali's performance in Engeyum Epothum. In fact, he was so pleased that he has gone ahead and offered her another role in a film he will be producing to be directed by his 7Aum Arivu assistant director. This film needless to say has a great script and it will be a good opportunity for Anjali.
Anjali of course accepted the offer. Murugadoss had given her a big break with Engeyum Epothum and she is thrilled to have the opportunity to do another film for his production house.

Vaishnavi, also a television actress, committed suicide a couple of years ago. In her suicide note, the actress had stated that Devananth was threatening her to marry him though he was already married.
This coercion put Vaishnavi in deep distress and she eventually committed suicide leaving a note that Devananth is the reason for her extreme step. The court on hearing his case, sentenced the actor to five years of imprisonment and slapped a 5000 rupees fine on him.

Ra One sets are record

Ra One, the Shah Rukh Khan starrer with Rajini in a cameo, has been screened in 87 theatres across Kerala. It is certainly a record because this is the first time a Hindi film is being screened in so many theatres in Kerala. A press note states: “We have released only Hindi Ra-One all over Kerala, despite the fact that 40% of Kerala are Tamilians, 50% of Kerala speak fluent Tamil and 70% understand Tamil very well and they enjoy non Malayalam films and as we anticipated the strategy worked well.”
Though the Kerala theatres have announced a strike from November 1st, the theatre owners have decided to allow the films that are already being screened. Therefore Ra One will also continue its run, say sources.

Velayutham Becomes a Winner in UK and USA

The Diwali releases are going over the top in box office results. While Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Ra One’ is rocking at its best spinning bigger profits, the Tamil releases aren’t an exception. Udhayanidhi Stalin’s ‘Ezham Arivu’ has grossed with a whooping collection of Rs. 25Crores within first five days after release.

On the pars, Vijay’s Velayutham is doing a fabulous business in box office not alone in Tamil Nadu but across the overseas region as well.

Bollywood’s most prominent trade analyst Taran Adarsh has mentioned that the film has taken a good opening in all areas of Mumbai while the overseas response is tremendous.

Susindhran Speaks About His Magic

Director Susindhran picks unique concepts and makes sure his films are literally different in all aspects from his previous ones. While ‘Vennila Kabadi Kulu’ was a sang-froid entertainer, his other film ‘Naan Mahaan Alla’ proved to be a A-One crime thriller. Apparently, his previous film ‘Azhagar Saamiyin Kuthirai’ was completely different and unparalleled from his other flicks.

Yes, ‘Rajapattai’ wouldn’t be an exception from this league and this is going to be more off a completely brand new style. ‘Rajapattai will be a commercial treat laced with humor, action, sentiments, glamour and more elements’ starts off Susindhran as he sheds lights on this film.

Ask him about making films based on different genres? Susindhran says, “Manirathnam sir was one of my deepest inspirations as his films always vary in style, but prove to be excellent ones. ‘Anjali’ and ‘Thalapathy’ hadn’t matched up even in a single similarity, but they were big hits. Similarly, filmmakers Manivannan and Shankar have always tried on different platforms and witnessed success.”

7aum Arivu vs. Velayutham

7aum Arivu and Velayutham collections for the first five days have been declared by trade sources. It is said that 7aum Arivu has grossed 40.25 crores from October 25th and Velayutham has grossed 40 crores from October 26th onwards.

Both Suriya and Vijay are excited over these figures because the competition is still neck and neck and looks like this competition will end in a draw.
Velayutham has Vijay, Hansika and Genelia in the lead while in 7aum Arivu it is Suriya and Shruti Haasan as the lead pair.

STR advises actress not to act with Jiiva?

Richa Gangopadhyay who will be making her debut in Tamil this month with Osthe and Mayakkam Enna was baffled when she heard the latest rumor doing the rounds. According to rumor mongers she had been approached for a film with Jiiva and STR intervened and told her not to work with his rival so she gave the project a thumbs down.

The actress was very unhappy when she heard this and quickly clarified her position. She said that no film with Jiiva was offered to her and STR certainly does not interfere in decisions regarding her career.

Yuvan’s Mother passes away

Jeeva Ilayaraja (60) wife of the maestro Ilayaraja passed away around 10pm on Monday (October 31) night at a private hospital, due to a cardiac arrest.

She had complained about chest pain and was rushed to Apollo Hospital, where she passed away.
Ilayaraja was in Hyderabad attending a function and rushed back late night. Her children music directors Karthik Raja and Yuvan Shankar Raja and daughter singer Bhavatharani were by her side.
Jeeva underwent a bypass surgery five years back. Her body will be taken to her village Pannaipuram in Theni district for the last rites on Tuesday.

Richa recalls her beauty pageant days in U.S.

Slimly-built Bengali beauty Richa Gangopadhyay is in for a twin-treat in Tamil films. The actress is all set for a grand debut in not one but two films, each of them opposite the leading ‘young guns’ in the Tamil film industry. A popular actress in Tollywood, Richa has bagged a couple of prestigious projects in Tamil.

She is the heroine of Simbu’s upcoming Osthi directed by Dharani and is also pairing up opposite Dhanush in his Mayakkan Enna directed by his elder brother Selvaraghavan. Both the films are likely to do well at the box-office, observe trade pundits. Osthi is the Tamil remake of the Bollywood hit film Dabbangg while Mayakkam Enna is the film re-uniting brothers Dhanush and Selvaa.
Reminiscing on her past, Richa recalls her adolescent days spent in United States when she took part in various beauty pageant contests. She proudly recalls how mightily excited she was when she won the ‘Miss Michigan’ title. Winning the beauty pageant served as a perfect platform for Richa to make her foray into the world of modeling when she landed up in India.
Tollywood was obviously happy to rope in Richa to do a few films there. Thanks to the popularity earned through her Telugu films, she has now got the offer to pair up opposite Simbu and Dhanush in Tamil films. Even while recalling her days in the U.S., Richa doesn’t forget New Delhi, her city of birth, and Coimbatore, where she was brought up during her school-days.
