‘Rakozhi’ postponed

Pushkar and Gayathri, who made the film 'Oram Po’, are ready with another story titled 'Rakozhi'. 'Oram Po' starring Arya and Pooja was about illegal auto racing that takes place in Chennai city.
'Rakozhi' as the name suggests might be about night life in Chennai. Impressed with just the one-line story of the film, Jai agreed to do the film instantly and he had signed on the dotted line. Lekha Washington who performed as the second lead in 'Jeyam Kondaan' will be the leading lady of 'Rakozhi'.
Initially, it was scheduled for last month in September to start filming ‘Rakozhi’. But as actor Jai has been busy doing other projects like ‘Aval peyar Tamizharasi’, ‘Vamanan’, and the cinematographer Nirav Shah has been with Vishnuvardhan for ‘Sarvam’, who is deemed inevitable by Pushkar for the film, the production of ‘Rakozhi’ has been postponed to next year.
He also added that he would try to get the script ready for his next film simultaneously.

Rajini's fans make a move

After painting Coimbatore red with wall-posters heralding the entry of actor Rajinikanth into politics, his fans in Kovai on Monday launched a political party in an attempt 'to put pressure' on the 'Superstar' to take the political plunge.
Announcing the party's name as Desiya Dravidar Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (DDMMK), they also released the party flag in red, white and black - featuring Rajini's face inside a shining star.
About the new outfit and flag, Rajni Babu, who is a councillor in Madukkarai says that the party had been launched only to impose pressure on their hero to foray politics. We have made this flag and outfit to represent ourselves in the world of politics and wish our leader to make his announcement soon.
Sources close to the actor said, “Rajini was scheduled to discuss the issue of entering politics and starting a party with his fans from 12th to 18th October.”
The meeting will take place amid expectations by his fans that he will follow the footsteps of Chiranjeevi, says one of his close friends.

Mani's initial shooting suffers hiccups!
Mani Ratnam's Raavan seems to have secretly kick started already. Shooting is underway in the lushly backwaters of Chalakkudi in God's own country, Kerala. Mani shot Prithviraj and Vikram for a few significant scenes.
However, the shooting wasn't devoid of any hiccups, we hear. Mani and
the crew had to wait for a couple of hours until the production incharge mobilized 50 boats required for the shooting. The crew is now camped in Kerala for the first leg of the shoot schedules and further shooting is in progress.
Vikram plays the antagonist, a role inspired by the mythological Hindu character Ravana – where Mani also derived his title.

One more remake
Cinematographer -director Rajeev Menon is back to wield the megaphone. After establishing himself as a successful director with films like, ‘Kandukonden Kandukonden’ and ‘Minsara Kanavu’, he chose to go on a hibernation mode only to do a Hindi movie now.
The ace cinematographer, who had worked in Mani Rathnam movies before, will do a Hindi movie which might feature Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan in the lead roles. Buzz is that he would be doing the Hindi remake of yesteryear Bollywood hit ‘Abhimaan’.
’Abhimaan’ featuring Big B and Jayabhadri was about the lives of two popular singers. Since it is a musical film, it looks likely that AR Rahman might be roped in to do the musical score.

Asin roped in for Marmayogi

Kamal Haasan has somehow finally included Asin into his forthcoming magnum opus ‘Marmayogi’. Well, though she would be appearing for just 2-3 scenes, her role would be so powerful. Trisha plays the role of Kamal Haasan’s second wife and who could be the first one? It is none other than Shriya Charan. Both of them are involved vividly learning in pronunciation of Tamil… Hema Malini performs the role of baddie as she would be donning the character of leader of opponent in rival..
Well, role played by Shobana is yet to be confirmed and Mumaith Khan has been the recent addition to the list of heroines. Telugu actor Venkatesh dons an important character and rest of the star-casts would be soon finalized…

Action star in a unusual sci-fi epic

Vin Diesel in a sci-fi action epic is something new for this star. Based on Maurice G. Dantec's dytopian sci-fi novel Babylon Babies, director Mathieu Kassovitz's film. Babylon A.D will soon have its Indiaan premier.
Diesel plays a mercenary known as Toorop who lives by a simple survivor's code: kill... or be killed. His
latest assignment has him smuggling a young woman named Aurora from a convent in Kazakhstan to New York City. Toorop, his new young charge Aurora and Aurora's guardian Sister Rebeka embark on a 6,000 mile journey. Facing obstacles at every turn, Toorop, the killer for hire, is tested like never before, in ways he could never have imagined - as he comes to understand that he is the custodian of the only hope for the future of mankind.
Babylon has rich atmosphere, impressive sets and action pieces, but the movie is too similar to films such as Children of Men and Doomsday for it to become a trend-setter.

‘Satyam’ puts an end to cop stories in Kodambakkam

It’s a fact that most of the heroes of Tamil Cinema including Superstar Rajnikanth and Kamal Haasan had won reputation performing cop roles in their flicks. The same trend was followed till the present day younger generation of actors. Yes, Surya who wasn’t so good in his career rose to the peaks of glory with his Kaakha Kaakha. Trying to tread across the same style, Vishal hopped on with ‘Satyam’. But the results were distressing for Vishal as the film didn’t even run in theatres successfully 10 days.
So, the latest buzz in the town is that all those heroes who were eyeing to gear up cop stories where they would perform gymnastics and gimmicks and make audiences fool. But now, with viewers turning out to be more intellectual, almost the entire stardom has decided not to land on cop stories for a while…

Piya - Rising in Kollywood

Actress Piya, who debuted in Kollywood through the film ‘Poi Solla Porom’ was actually brought to Tamil films by Raju Sundaram for ‘Aegan’ to pair opposite Navdeep in a prominent role, which could be even more meaty than that of Nayatara in the same film. This popular model in Mumbai has done many ads with Amitabh and Shahrukh and her gorgeous looks, charm have made her flooded with offers.
Even before the release of her first film in Tamil, she rechristened her name from Piya to Priya.
Actress Priya is next doing a film with Shakthi, directed by Badri. The title of the film is ‘Enga veetu pillai’, which is recycled from the yesteryear mega hit of M.G.R. However the new film will have nothing in common except for the same producers.

Villu director changes track!

Prabhu Deva, the most sought-after director in Kollywood and Tollywood, will soon don the greasepaint once again, according to the buzz doing rounds. This choreographer-turned-actor-turned-director had been getting offers to act for long but he was shunning these opportunities to direct films. But, recently, Prabhu Deva seems to have been bitten by
the acting bug and is on the verge of signing on the dotted lines for a new project.
We hear that Ravi Chakravarthi, in all probability, will direct Prabhu Deva. It may be recalled that Ravi had directed him earlier in Allaudin a few years ago.

Thamannah topping charts of heroines

Trisha, Nayanthara and Ileana: these would have been the top-charting heroines of South Indian Film industry. But now, they are quite despaired about the re-entry of Thamannah. Yup! The actress is so energized with whatever roles she dons and her bubbly looks has really enchanted everyone. But, what made the other heroines losing their offers to Thamannah is because of their ageing looks. At present, Thamannah is pairing up with lead actors Surya with ‘Ayyan’, Dhanush in ‘Padikadhavan’ and many more offers are awaited on her part.
Apart from these offers, she has been roped into the remake of Hindi blockbuster ‘Jab We Met’ with Bharath. Also, she has been approached by Mahesh Babu in her forthcoming Telugu film that is expected to be directed by Gowtham Menon.

Siddharth’s reentry into Kollywood

With his stunning stylish and sleek looks, Siddarth has been one such guy who was expected a lot in the film industry to make such high waves in Tamil film industry. Not sure about what could have been the good reason why he hadn’t made his high scores in Kollywood other than ‘Boys’ and ‘Aayutha Ezhuthu’. Nevertheless, this star was so swaying across the Bollywood and Tollywood. Telugu films ‘Bommarillu’ and ‘Nuvosthan onte’ were his greatest blockbusters.
Now, he would be again venturing back into Tamil film industry for a film to be produced by Trisha’s manager Nassir. None of the details about either script or none of the crewmembers have been finalized.

Maestro Ilayaraja will soon create a symphony of Naalaayira Divya Prabandham. This was announced during the release of the printed version of the Naalaayira Divya Prabandham recently. These divine poems were composed by the Azhwars during the eighth century but they were complied some 200 years later.
Our sources have it that the symphony is scheduled to be released during the Margazhi Music Festival. Ilayaraja had composed Thiruvasagam in 2005 and was performed by the Budapest Symphony Orchestra while his first symphony was in 1993 by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Is Taare Zameen Par Oscar-worthy?
India’s farfetched Oscar dreams are once again being rekindled with Taare Zameen Par competing as the country’s official entry in the foreign language category. While the question of craving for Oscar’s attention is a separate case in point worth discussing, it’s also important to ponder over the nominations from the Indian side. Are we, as a nation inhibited by the best of creative minds, sincerely nominating movies for the only possible category based on what the movie has to offer? Or simply because the movie has attained commercial and critical success? The latter seems to be the case, clearly.
TZP is, without a fragment of doubt, one of the finest movies Indian film industry has seen in the past year. It was an attempt to throw light on the forgotten and often overlooked issues prevailing in children such as dyslexia. Same way, TZP was successful in creating awareness of such ailments among parents.
But, unfortunately, it wasn’t devoid of all the Bollywood’s glitz and glamour. It had hummable songs and a clearly etched out relationship thread between a teacher and a dyslexic boy that was solely an insertion to evoke the so called sentiments of the viewers. It was anything but subtle and in your face, and hence not close to real life. After all, Aamir is a businessman who has apparently only looked at the script from the scope-at-the-box-office perspective.
So our hearts went out for the characters of the movie. We cried and sympathized for Ishaan and his parents and felt fondly for the teacher Nikumbh – but then did we not do the same thing for Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and Dil to Paagal Hai - the crying? So where is the difference? Oh yeah, there is no song and dance routine and the most inevitable heroine – but is that innovation at all? May be for Bollywood.
Attaining commercial success should not shun a movie from appearing for Oscars, I agree. But isn’t Oscar given away for movies that are considered fine, with a message that often trades commercial viability for the need to sound real?
TZP is a bitter pill, necessarily intended to be good medicine, but heavily sugar coated and hence, I doubt, not suitable for consumption by the Oscars. It’s more Bollywood than world cinema.
So what does it leave TZP with? All the awards that Indian government and all the other film-based organizations in India could possibly give away. Because it’s a good cinema by Indian standards - not necessarily by world standards. And world cinema has most certainly seen better movies that focused on the same issue.
On the other hand, there is a gem purposely and conveniently avoided by the bureaucrats during the selection process. The Marathi movie Tingya, which is set in a Maharshtrian village and narrates the life of a rural boy and his love and friendship for his bull. It’s hard-hitting and real and had already been shown in enough and more film festivals all over the world. Besides, it has also won numerous awards in those film festivals.
Tingya also touches upon on the burning issues of rural Maharashtra – they are issues of rural India, precisely – like farmer suicide, unemployment, and lack of proper education. Only that you or I do not know Tingya existed until the producer decided to send it as an Independent entrant to the Oscars in the foreign language category – for which TZP is making an entry officially with the red carpet honors.
Somehow doesn’t Tingya feel like a better bet than the tale of a friendship between a super rich dyslexic kid and his boarding school art teacher?
Trisha in a scuffle?

After the blockbuster victory of Billa, director Vishnuvardhan is currently working in Sarvam with Arya and Trisha in lead roles. It has been said that Trisha’s role has really shaped well in Sarvam and the film is slated to hit the screens soon. Meanwhile rumors were rife in the industry that Trisha and the director had a fall out during the shooting of the film. When
probed, it was understood that there was indeed some discordance related to the climax. As per the script, Trisha dies at the end of the film. But the actress was not too sure about this ending as a similar finale in Beema was not well received by the audience. However, the issue has apparently been settled amicably and the unit was found proceeding with their schedule as usual.

Revisiting the magic of Kangal Irandaal

These are times when songs are shot as fantasies, in giant expensive sets or scenic foreign locations. But among the crowd of songs that provide visual pleasure, some stand out for their simplicity, their proximity to our lives. Being simple is not a simple thing to do, especially when the world is moving the other way, swimming against the tide takes
conviction. Songs shot as montages have always been popular through the years. The effectiveness of montages lies in the fact that they take the story forward and thus hold our attention, they build characters and can fold many subplots into them. Subramaniapuram’s Kangal Irandaal is the best recent example of a montage working wonders.
But before talking about the montage, let’s also talk about the music that made the song so beautiful in the first place. This is not the kind of mellifluous stuff that debutants are able to produce often. But counting James Vasanthan as a debutant would be a mistake. Even though Subramaniapuram was his first film as composer, he has been around in the world of music long enough to know what exactly to produce. Most of us cannot appreciate the intricacies of the ragas used, but for those who would like to know, Kangal Irandaal is based on the Reethigowlai ragam. The music director is not the only debutant for this superhit song, even the singers are first timers. Belly Raj and Deepa Mariam, have done an outstanding job. Belly Raj had been trying his luck for some time in Kollywood before this opportunity came knocking. Belonging to the rather unknown and small Baduga community who are still to come into cities, he believes that his achievement will be an inspiration to his people.
When the song was being conceived, director Sasikumar had described in detail his plan of how to shoot the song, James Vasanthan had set the tune and Thamarai had written the lyrics. Thamarai took more than a week to get the lyrics in order, she had some commitments at home. But when she gave the lyrics, there were 4 pallavis, out of which the best was chosen, too sad that the other 3 could not be heard.
The beauty of Kangal Irandaal is the innocence of the romance. The lyrics describe perfectly the romance that blossomed only through furtive glances, the deep desire for a few words but the apprehension that holds them back. Of course, such a song might look out of place in contemporary times, but it set in perfectly with the Madurai of 1980s, that’s why we all love it so much.
