THE BEST OF DEEPAVALI 2003-2008

2008
Once again, Thala is here for Deepavali. Aegan is expected to rock theaters two days before festival day. This time round, the competition comes only from Bharath’s Seval under Hari’s direction which could well prove to be the dark horse. Too bad Surya is not making it for the celebrations

2007
Surya was coming to Deepavali after a long, long time with Vel. But Ilaiya Thalapathi had Azhagiya Thamizh Magan. In the clash of the big stars, Surya ultimately emerged on top with a well made Vel making the festival advantage count. Meanwhile, the smaller fish, namely, Kannamoochi Enada and Machchakaran could not do much, the former faring better. But 2007 definitely belongs to the trend setting Polladhavan of Dhanush.

2006
Silambarasan was trying to repeat his Manmadhan success story with Vallavan. But this time, Thala was all geared to create Varalaaru while Arya was trying to create his own Vattaram. Captain had his Dharmapuri. But Deepavali 2006 was all about Ajith’s Varalaaru. There was no stopping it right from day one. Vallavan was a big disappointment.
2005
In a Deepavali marred by rain and thunder showers, the movies couldn’t do too well. It was between Vijay’s Sivakasi and Vikram’s Maja, a repeat of the 2003 clash. After losing a good portion of their collections to rain, Sivakasi managed to get the better of Maja, only marginally though. However, a third person proved to be the dark horse. Cheran’s Thavamai Thavamirindhu winning accolades from all quarters.
2004
It was Thala Deepavali with Attagasam releasing. But there was also Silambarasan’s Manmadhan in the fray, the others were small. After holding sway for the initial few weeks, Attagasam gave the lead to the slickly made psycho tale. A proud hit for Silambarasan.
Deepavali- big stars, big movies and big expectations. It is the time of the year when battle royal is fought at the box office. A look back at the last 5 Deepavali’s for Kollywood.
2003
The last time that Ajith and Vijay met for Deepavali. But they also had Vikram for company. Thirumalai, Anjaneya and Pithamagan met for a three pronged clash. The race was between Pithamagan and Thirumalai after the first weekend. Eventually though Pithamagan emerged as the movie that was remembered for a special reason, Vikram’s national award. And let’s not forget Surya’s comic performance which charmed all of us. For Ajith fans, it was a disappointing Deepavali.
