Sindhanai Sei Review

Music review By Malathy Sundaram
Produced by Gilli Sekhar,Amma Rajasekhar. Directed by Yuvan who also stars in it along with Seshanth, Nitish Kumar,Shaffi Bala, Madhu Sharma and Darsha. Music is by debutant Thaman.S. who is currently working on Eeram, Moscovin Kaveri, and Aridu, Aridu. He was a drummer in Venkat Prabhu’s music group(Next Generation). Some of his famous ad jingles include Arun Ice cream, Pothys and Chennai Silks. He has gone on record
saying that each of his five songs for the film are trendy and totally unpredictable. The story seems to be about 5 teenagers who meet up later in life. We have action and love depicted in a novel way here, according to its director who is incidentally the youngest brother of Sekhar and Rajasekhar.
Sindhanai Sei...Vocals: Krishnamoorthy, Thaman.SLyrics: Pa. Vijay
The title song ,of course. Though it just touches upon the old hit of Sivaji Ganesan in Ambigapathi, there is nothing in common. In fact the song seems to be set on the Natabairavi scale as are two others in the album. A loosely structured song with some nice guitar and tabla work. All about urging the mind to maintain’ mindful awareness’, though put across in a light manner. The song does grow on you after you listen twice. The articulation is, well, funny.

Ellaame Ellaame...Vocals: Navin MadhavLyrics: Yugabarathy
A song of slow tempo indicating slight disillusionment. Well sung by Navin. The interludes too project restraint and is that a guitar bit that is played before the first violin interlude? Quite cute! The keys too have been used pleasantly.Does this song make you vaguely recall ‘Anbe en Anbe’ from Dhaam Dhoom?

Mannu Nee...Vocals: RanjithLyrics: Yuvan
This song is differently structured in that it appears to have only one charanam of sorts after the pallavi. The initial notes that go’pa ma ga sa sa ga sa---sa ni dha pa----‘ and the guitar bit that goes’ sa sa ga ri sa’ often run through this song creating a mild haunting effect. The lyrics are childish and what are they supposed to convey, the film alone can justify.

Thappum Illai...Vocals: Rahul NambiarLyrics: Yugabarathy
Well, this song too has a pretty note repeating itself right through the song’ pa ma pa dha pa-----pa ma pa dha ni’ sometimes with

the violins and guitar combining, sometimes the keys and violin. Is it the sitar that fires the salvo’ sa ri ri ri---‘ two and a half minutes into the song? The lyrics are hard to interpret, in the sense they convey anguish, cynicism and rebelliousness somewhat vaguely. Both the interludes have rich rhythm patterns. A dramatic song!

Naa Kakinada...Vocals: SuchitraLyrics: Yugabarathy
A hot hot seductive number from Suchitra. Nice sunshine rhythms and some bright trumpet sounds add josh to this foot tapping number. Is worth listening to in spite of the so-so lyrics because of the beats.

Verdict:
What can you say about this album except that it has tried really hard to be different and the effort shows ? The music itself is rather dramatic, and sometimes strident. Almost all the songs, barring one seem to be pitched on the 6-kattai scale, which does not afford much variety in terms of listening. This young composer has other films lined up too. Let us wish him well for now.
