Aamir & Surya in Murugadoss’s next!

The Aamir - Asin starrer Ghajini is finally wrapped up. With the remaining couple of songs having been shot recently, Murugadoss is busy with the post-production work. The director is said to be busy in the editing studios of Mumbai burning the midnight oil to get the movie ready for a Deepavali release. Inside sources assert that Ghajini would be ready to release in October.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that Murugadoss has planned his next Tamil venture with Surya. We also got wind of the news that Aamir’s dates are requested for a cameo role in the movie. Although it is not known whether Aamir has nodded consent, given the fact that Aamir and Murugadoss get along famously well, that sounds like a possibility indeed.

'Kuselan' will not spoil Shahrukh's chances – Priyadarshan

'Kuselan' has released with heightened fanfare and is running to packed houses in Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh. As already reported Rajinikanth's 'Kuselan' is the remake of the Malayalam film 'Katha Parayumbol' written by Sreenivasan.
Another Malayalam filmmaker who has been quite successful in Hindi films as well, Priyadarshan, is remaking the film in Hindi with Shahrukh Khan and Irfan Khan in the lead roles and the movie is called 'Billoo Barber'.
There was speculation in the media that 'Kuselan' would be dubbed in Hindi soon. According to this information, Shahrukh Khan was reportedly in panic because Hindi audiences would see Rajinikanth in the role he is slated to play. 'Billoo Barber is expected to be released during the Diwali season.
This report also added that Rajinikanth had stepped in and assured Shahrukh Khan that the dubbed version of 'Kuselan' would not be released before Diwali.
A new light is now thrown on this entire episode. Director Priyadarshan has declared that 'Kuselan' cannot be dubbed into any other language.
Says Priyadarshan, 'when P. Vasu and his team approached Sreenivasan for acquisition of copyright, he consulted with me. We agreed to go ahead with all their requests because they were adamant Rajinikanth would be cast in the film. However, we made sure to include a clause that said 'Kuselan' cannot be dubbed in any other language'.
Priyadarshan also added that 'Billoo Barber' would be very different from 'Kuselan'. 'Only the ending of both the movies would be the same. I have always maintained that Irfan Khan would be the main character of the film and not Shahrukh Khan'.
'Rajinikanth is introduced in the film riding a winged horse. My portrayal of the 'superstar' character would be more on a realistic approach. It will be very different from 'Kuselan' said an assertive Priyadarshan.
With Priyadarshan's statement, all speculation as to 'Kuselan' spoiling Shahrukh Khan's dreams can be laid to rest once and for all.

Jeyaram vouches for Ajith

Jeyaram, donning an important role in Aegan, had some good words for his co-star Ajith. Ajith is considered by many in Kollywood to be a gentleman in the film industry, and Jeyaram's words about him only seem to substantiate it. According to the actor, a man of few words, Ajith never minced his words. Speaking about Aegan, Jeyaram claimed that the film

will be talked for its comedy. Aegan is choreographer Raju Sundaram's debut directorial venture. Expectations over this film have been skyrocketing ever since it was announced, as Ajith and Nayanthara are pairing up yet again after the colossal success of Billa. Aegan, in all probability, could hit the silver screens sometime during September.

Hollywood Corner: Hollywood blockbuster all set to break records

Even The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon hasn't been able to jolt The Dark Knight from its top spot at the U.S. box office. If The Dark Knight continues to hold its number one position for two more weeks, it could even beat Titanic's all time $600 million record. The new Batman movie has so far earned an estimated $395 million in the U.S.

alone, and is expected to cross the $400 million milestone this week.

The Mummy still took in 42.5 on its opening weekend, putting its hero Brendan Fraser in the unique position of being the star of two top grossing movies back to back: earlier his Journey to the Center of the Earth, the Jules Verne fantasy classic redone in 3-D, opened at $20 million.

And poor X-Files. Even in its second weekend it is only ninth at the B.O. with $3.4 million. It could earn the title of the summer's biggest bomb, having taken in only $17 million.

Meanwhile, Vijay’s next two

consecutive projects seem to have been finalized if sources are to be believed. As informed by us earlier, the actor would work for the AVM productions venture, produced by AVM Balakrishnan. The next project after that, which would be Vijay’s 50th movie, is to be produced by his father’s V.V. Creations. An official announcement and further details in this regard are awaited.

The young director's debut film 'Kanne Madanguka' bagged three Kerala State awards and three debut directorial awards.

Does Mani mean money?

Maniratnam's Madras Talkies has reportedly signed a record deal of Rs. 120 crores with Reliance Big Picture, a division of the multi-crore Anil Dhirubai Ambani Group for his new untitled film which will simultaneously be made in three languages- Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.

The Hindi version will have Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai in the lead and Govinda in a negative role, while the Tamil and Telugu versions will have Vikram doing Abhishek's role. Aishwarya Rai will be the heroine for all the three versions.

The role being done by Govinda in Hindi would be recreated in Tamil and Telugu by Pritviraj, if one has to go by reports. Meanwhile, there are also rumors doing rounds that Karthik, who recently floated his own political outfit would do the villain.

Kuselan Ticket Prices Slashed

Even though opening weekend tickets were sold out in all the major locations, the US distributors of Kuselan, toeing in line with the requests from Behindwoods.com visitors and in consonance with the friendship week, have slashed the ticket price of Rajini's blockbuster from $15 to $10. According to

Jayavel Murugan, who is marketing the movie for Pyramid Saimira Group, "Kuselan is a movie to be watched with friends and family and we want to encourage repeat audience. Rajini's fans and every Tamil household should come and watch this blockbuster movie. It's a wholesome family entertainer with a fitting climax that can move every one and can make them rush to their old forgotten friends."

Jayavel Murugan also highlighted, "Gas and food prices have gone up, at least economical movie tickets will be a relief! After all, watching movies are a favorite pastime of Indians! We, from our side, will do whatever we can to encourage people to see movies like Kuselan."

Dasavatharam creates yet another record

The information below has been sent by a Behindwoods visitor from the UAE. If you need to verify the information here, contact the visitor at the email id below.

Hi,

I am a regular viewer of behindwoods.com and appreciate your efforts to post news related to Kollywood films.

I am glad to inform you that Dasavatharam has completed 50 days in Dubai and thereby created a history in the UAE. Yes, it is possibly the first Tamil film to reach a milestone of 50 days. Normally Tamil films are taken out of the theatres within the first four weeks of its release here, but for Dasavatharam, due to the fact that many non-Tamil speaking audiences are thronging the theatres to see Kamal in 10 different roles, it has continued running.

Is 'Marmayogi' really 'Maruthanayagam in disguise'?

For well over a decade now it has been very clear that Kamal Haasan has a dream project in mind and that is 'Maruthanayagam'. The project was started way back and about thirty minutes of the film was canned. According to sources, several Crores of Rupees were spent for the thirty minutes and the thought of canning the rest of the film scared away the producers. 'Maruthanayagam' then came to a screeching halt.

It can be recalled that when the Queen of England, Elizabeth II, was in Chennai, certain shots were filmed having her as an audience and later the filmmakers showed her some of the already canned scenes.

'Maruthanayagam' as revealed then is supposedly the story of a man who single handedly revolted against the exploits of the mighty British Empire and because of which was hanged to death. But then he had made a mark. The stamp of righteousness and the will to fight for what he knew was right.

The character of Maruthanayagam is much like the life of the legendary Spartacus – the man brushed away to obscurity for being born a slave and yet had the gumption to lead a slave army against the mighty Roman Republic. Spartacus is a character in history who won hearts by perishing the way he did. Rome won on the day it killed Spartacus, but as time the weary traveler plodded on, that victory had become a pathetic failure in terms to how Spartacus had changed the way Rome functioned in the years to come. Spartacus's real intent had reached the world and today he is hailed as a man who stood for the rights of the oppressed. Spartacus had become the real winner.

The story of Spartacus was made in Hollywood in the year 1960 with a terrific cast that included Kirk Douglas, Lawrence Olivier and Jean Simmons. It went on to win four academy awards.

Kamal Haasan's 'Maruthanayagam' has Spartacus's soul in it and in order to recreate the magnificence of the character, huge sums of money were needed.

What makes big news at this juncture is that there is a whiff in the air as to what the connection between 'Maruthanayagam' and 'Marmayogi' could be. Owing to the fact that 'Maruthanayagam' met with protests by a section of the public when it was being filmed and the fact that 'Marmayogi' requires about 120 Crores of Rupees to materialize has brought about the question – Is 'Marmayogi' really 'Maruthanayagam' in disguise? Moreover, it has been officially declared that 'Marmayogi' is a period film set in the sixth century AD.

Has Kamal Haasan started disguising his stories when they are under production much like he disguises himself on screen?

The real truth will surface soon.

Asin`s maid clears doubts

Asin’s maid, who was alleged to have been kept under illegal detention by the star in Mumbai, appeared before the Chennai police on Saturday and said that she was working with Asin voluntarily.

Asin was caught in this drama when her maid’s family apparently filed a case that their daughter Bula, has been “kidnapped, kept against her will at the actress residence in Mumbai, is abused and now missing”. Based on the complaint, the police had launched investigations and also decided to question Asin.

However, on Saturday Beaulah told the police that she had been working with the star since 2003 and had voluntary left for Mumbai to be with her. “I was not kidnapped or detained illegally by Asin or her associates. I was working with Asin both as a maid and makeup artiste since she made her debut in cinema five years ago. A few months ago, I voluntarily went with Asin to Mumbai, where she is shooting for a film,” Bulah told the police.

The reason, Beaulah gave for not picking calls from her mother was that her mother was troubling her for more and more money. Following this, chennai police have decided to close the case.

Namitha NO to item number

Namitha, who did a cameo with Vijay in 'Azhagiya Thamizh Magan' has reportedly refused an offer to do an item number when Prabhudeva approached her for the Vijay starrer 'Villu'.

According to sources, Namitha has refused the offer following her recent decision not to accept cameos or item numbers as she feels they would mar her image.

The actress is currently performing in lead roles in a handful of films, including 'Perumal', 'Indira Vizha' and 'Jagan Mohini'. She played breezy roles in 'Billa' and 'Azhagiya Thamizh Magan'.

Namitha reportedly is mighty keen to continue playing heroine.

Jayaram says 'Aegan' will have some rib tickling comedy.

'The comedy portion has come out great. Sathyan is the other actor who will have you in splits', he adds.

'Aegan' will hit screens this September.

Reacting to Rajini's 'Kick'!

Over reacting seems to be the order of the day. One test loss in Lanka was enough to put the careers of four illustrious sportspersons under the scanner for the umpteenth time only to be withdrawn in a hurry a few week later when the series had been equaled. Knee jerk reactions like these have become common place and it makes one wonder whether it is becoming a tradition to first say something and then think about it. The incident that began with Rajnikanth’s ‘controversial’ comments on the Hogennakkal issue is a classic example of too much being made out of too simple an issue, all due to the tendency to over react. This is not meant to be an explanation of what might have been meant and what had been interpreted, neither is it an attempt to land the blame on any single person for this sequence of unfortunate events. This is just to remind ourselves that the entire fiasco never had to happen, it was something totally avoidable and at the time of writing this the issue has not yet seen its end. There have been a few dissenting sounds in the industry following the apology or expression of regret

that was tendered by the Superstar which if not handled with maturity, could cause an unwarranted extension of an issue that has been around for too long.

It all started with the film fraternity joining hands to express their strong support to the Hogenakkal project and to condemn the opposition of Karnataka. Rajinikanth is generally loved for his ‘punch’ dialogues, but the ‘kick’ dialogue that he delivered that day did not go down too well with a few people in Karnataka. Anyone who knows Rajnikanth will certainly understand that he certainly did not mean what he said and literally, giving a kick to the whole of Karnataka is not possible. But it has to be admitted that even though Superstar never had the kick in mind, the choice of words could have been better. To put it in better words, the sentiments should have been diplomatically put forth. But what followed the ‘off the cuff’ remark was a series of unsavory events that were definitely uncalled for. Some miscreants and disturbers of public peace, took it into their hands to restore the ‘pride’ of Karnataka, the only question being if the ‘pride’ had been lost at all. If these loyal and violently miscreants believed that the whole of Karnataka could be insulted by one hypothetical kick, then they have to think again. Asking for a ban on Rajnikanth films in the state, tearing and burning of posters and banners and other such protests make it look more like a political gimmick. Banning Rajnikanth’s films, to which the livelihood of many people is linked, for a matter that involved only Rajnikanth was scandalous, albeit a regular practice in our country (remember, Aamir Khan films don’t release in Gujarat). Their sense of pride and love for their state and mother tongue can be understood, but this was hardly an occasion that merited such spirited expression. To put it simply, the emotions were right, but the occasion and the method of expression were way off the mark. Demanding an explanation from the Superstar for his comments was the only reasonable demand, and would have looked much more credible if it had come without all the other destructive add-ons.

Well, then explanations were given, most of which veered away from the actual matter. Telling that he had been in Bangalore for a long time and could never wish ill for Karnataka and that even Kannadigas enjoyed his movies were statements that did not directly address the issue on hand. The urgency for an amicable resolution to the issue was increasing as August 1st neared. Initially, there was a deal struck with the Film Chamber for a limited release, but prevailing tensions are not exactly a conducive atmosphere to release a movie and Rajinikanth decided to step in and settle the issue for good. When matters reach such heights of contention someone has to relent that the issue be resolved and one must really appreciate Rajinikanth for not being too egotistical in giving the public an explanation for his words. We knew even without him saying that he never meant ill for anyone, let alone the Kannadigas and did not wish to hurt anyone’s sentiments. But for things to return to normal he had to explain things which he did - and hopefully the matter has ended here.

But what are the dissenting voices in the Tamil film industry? What are they upset about? That Rajinikanth offered an explanation (seen by many as an apology) for (even if unwillingly) sparking off the protests. What else should he have done? Waited for the issue to go from bad to worse, for the producer of Kuselan to incur a few crores of losses in Karnataka, for a few more posters to burn? If they were so much in favor of what Rajini had said, why did they wait for him to tender an apology before speaking out on the issue? The support for Rajini and Kuselan’s release in Karnataka should have been out in the open much earlier. One person has felt that Rajini should not have apologized, but personally refunded the losses of distributors in Karnataka- fanciful and impossible. Yes, it has happened once before, with Baba, but it was an unfortunate debacle, not a precedent for the future. Rajinikanth acted quickly and responsibly in the best interest of many people who are linked to Kuselan. Not only K.B, but also the distributors, exhibitors and fans who come to watch his films. If some people feel that the whole of Tamil Nadu will lose its self respect just because one man (even if it is Superstar) tendered an apology to Karnataka, then they are way off the mark. Standing up and accepting mistakes is one of the toughest and bravest things to do, especially when you are the idol of millions.

The whole thing might look a bit confusing. There is no one person on whom the blame can be hung. Rajini triggered the issue with a speech where emotions dictated the words that were spelt out. Reactions, counter-reactions and many more exchanges brought the issue to a point where an unconditional statement of regret was required. It came to this because of what looks like an inherent tendency to overreact, to feel hurt and victimized and retaliate. What could have passed off as a few inappropriate words became a matter of pride for two states. Has anything more trivial become this big an issue before?

Ash loses out to Katrina?

Aishwarya Rai is out and Katrina Kaif is in! Well, the former Miss World has opted out as the brand ambassador of the Nakshatra Diamonds. Ash has been endorsing the brand since 2004 and when time came for renewal of the contract, the lady imposed some strict conditions, which did not go too well with Nakshatra Diamonds. They

promptly found a suitable replacement in Katrina Kaif. However, hubby Abishek insists that Ash was the one who pulled out of Nakshatra Diamonds and not the other way round. It may be noted that earlier this year, Ash lost her much-coveted place – the most searched Bollywood personality on the net – to Katrina.

Udayanidhi brings Suriya and Nayantara together

Udayanidhi's Red Giant Movies is gearing up for its second film after the Vijay starrer 'Kuruvi'. The film will bring Suriya and Nayantara as a pair for the very first time and the movie will be directed by K. S. Ravikumar.

But then this project will start only after a host of movies are completed. Suriya will have to complete the film 'Ayan' while Nayantara will have to complete her portions in the Vijay starrer 'Villu' and 'Aegan' starring Ajith. K. S. Ravikumar is currently working on 'Jaggubhai' featuring Sarath Kumar and Shriya Saran.

When all these projects see the light of day, Udayanidhi's second venture will kick start and that is expected to be sometime in December. Word has it that K. S. Ravikumar had been planning to get Suriya and Nayantara together for a long time now. Both these stars are not completely new to each other as Nayantara played a cameo in 'Gajini' in which Asin was the heroine.

Interestingly Nayantara is pairing with Vijay for the first time in the under-production film 'Villu' directed by Prabhu Deva, although she danced with Vijay for a song in 'Sivakasi'.

Moser Baer to the rescue of 'Dishyum' Sasi

Director Sasi shot to fame with his film 'Dishyum' that featured Jeeva and Sandhya in lead roles. The director is now coming up with a film titled 'Poo' starring Srikanth and a debutante from Kerala, Parvathi.

Sources say that the talented Sasi is not especially happy with certain sequences of the film and wants to change them for the sake of quality. 'Poo' is produced by Moser Baer who are also producing a host of other movies like 'Raman Thediya Seethai' starring Cheran,'s 'Abhiyum Naanum' starring Prakash Raj and Trisha 'Mayilu' with newcomers and 'Aval Peyar Tamilarasi' starring Jai and a newcomer.

Reports also suggest that Sasi is making 'Poo' with tremendous artistic qualities which deems fit for awards. To give him the much needed breather for quality's sake Moser Baer would go ahead and release some of the other films from their stable before 'Poo'. Truly a noble gesture from the production house.

Since 'Poo' may go on to clinch many awards, the filmmakers are getting debutant Parvathi to dub with her own voice. Despite the beautiful lass not being a Tamil, she reportedly is not facing many problems with dubbing.

Vikram bowled over by Oman

'Kanthaswamy' starring Vikram and Shriya Saran is being shot in Oman, which is fast emerging a favorite destination for Indian filmmakers.

Directed by Susi Ganesan, the film is being shot in different parts of Oman, including Oman Dive Centre, Al Sawadi, Sohar beach, Qantab, Yacht Club and Omani roads.

Vikram described Oman as one of the most beautiful places he had ever shot in, while Shriya, whose Hindi film ‘Mission Istanbul’ is currently running in theatres in the Sultanate, termed the Gulf country as 'very pretty.'

“We have now been here for five days and it has been just fantastic”, said Akshay Chowdhary, director of an event management company that brought the film's producers to Oman.

He added, “We thought the best way to promote Oman was by making it a destination for people and the best way to do that was by tying up with film production houses in India, and other parts of the world, and bring them over here to shoot films”.

“We are in talks with a lot of production houses.... We will gradually invite other units,” he was quoted as saying.

Ilayaraja to act in 'Azhagar Malai'

Sangili Murugan is producing a film titled 'Azhagar Malai' which is directed by S. P. Rajkumar. An interesting piece of information is that music maestro Ilayaraja is acting in a song apart from singing it.

It can be recalled that Tamil film audiences have seen the maestro before the camera in the song 'Madai Thiranthu' which featured in the film 'Nizhalgal' and 'Kalayana Malai' from the film 'Puthu Puthu Arthangal'. Both these films were run away successes.

S. P. Rajkumar is probably trying to recreate the same success by casting Ilayaraja in a song.

The highly talented music maestro will be seen visiting a school in Madurai and will also picture him in deep meditation at the Sri Ramanar Ashram in Tiruvannamalai. Sources say that the entire song has been designed in such a way that Ilayaraja will be the prime focus.

Ajith in Tamil remake of 'Race'

Ajith's passion for motorbike racing is widely known. He took part in many motor racing championships and carved a niche for himself.

The actor, who bid adieu to car races a couple of years ago, is now getting ready to act in the Tamil remake of Hindi blockbuster 'Race'.

According to sources, Ashok Amritraj who produced Shankar's film 'Jeans' has approached Ajith with this offer. 'Race' is about two brothers played by Saif Ali Khan and Akshay Khanna double crossing each other which eventually leads to their downfall.

Attracted by the storyline, Ajith has expressed his consent to act in the film. Meanwhile, 'Aegan', the next venture of Ajith is also a remake of the Bollywood super hit movie Main Hoon Naa. 'Aegan' is nearing its completion.
