DK Pattammal, no more

DK Pattammal, hailed to be the first and finest of women singers to bravely come on stage, on par with men, passed away on Thursday, following a cardiac arrest. She was 90 years old.
Known for her distinct voice and style, she was one of the trinity of women singers to take on the stage first, the other two, being MS Subbulakshmi and ML Vasanthakumari. DK Pattammal is also widely regarded for having a penchant for Bharathiyar songs, many of which were sung in films by her. A lover of the Tamil language, she made Tamil songs popular in her concerts, by composing and singing them regularly.
Apart from these, the Padmabushan and Padmavibushan recipient also had a fondness for Muthuswami Dikshithar’s kritis, many of which were popularized by her. She has sung for more than 10 films, including ‘Naam Iruvar’, ‘Vedhala Ulagam’ and more recently, ‘Hey Ram’, which had her sing playback for the last time (the song Vaishnava Janatho).
DK Pattammal is survived by her husband Easwaran, sons Shivakumar and Lakshmana Kumar.
