Rahman: "Make your own movie"

In a rare occurrence, A.R. Rahman has perhaps for the first time in his career chosen to give a reply to critics barely a fortnight before the Oscars are scheduled to be given away at Los Angeles on the 22nd of Feb. He has not been known to react to criticisms before but this time his score for Slumdog Millionaire came under a lot of fire for reasons other
than music. Everyone by now would have heard about the fire that Slumdog Millionaire has had to face due to its portrayal of the slums in Mumbai.
Many individuals and groups have come out stating that the film is derogatory to India and shows our country's dark underbelly in an inappropriate way to the Western world. Many high profile film personalities too have made public their dislike of the movie, prominent among them being director Priyadarshan who took a rather sharp view of the way Danny Boyle had chosen to ignore the more beautiful parts of Mumbai. The supposed depiction of India as a land of misery and poverty has irked them and following this lawsuits have been filed against most of the important people associated with the movie which includes actor Anil Kapoor and Rahman. Objection has also been raised against the film's title 'Slumdog' which has been considered to be derogatory to the people who live in slums.
Following a non-stop torrent of such comments from a few individuals and organizations which has received a lot of press coverage Rahman finally gave his stand on the entire issue. He does not in any way regret scoring for the movie or sharing the opinion that it shows anyone in poor light. He believes that the movie is about the universal human spirit and its triumph above all odds. Describing the cast and crew of the movie as very sensitive people he said that, if he did not like a particular movie then his natural response as a creative person would be to make another movie to prove his point rather than rant about it in public.

Karunas’ son enters tinsel world

'They are dancing in the aisles': America loves Slumdog

Ever since 'Slumdog Millionaire' won three Golden Globes, curiosity about the film got the better of America and the film has been running to packed houses. This interest has been fueled by the film winning many more awards especially as the Oscars are nearing.
Danny Boyle has packaged the film for western audiences depicting a very alive India - chaotic and otherwise. An extraordinary screenplay by Simon Beaufoy keeps the interest level very high at all times. Another jewel in the crown of the film is A. R. Rahman's stupendous and thumping music. One can say the musical score in itself is a lifeline to the film and western ears are relishing every single note as they have never heard this kind of music before.
According to reports, most American theaters are witnessing people dancing in the aisles as the credits roll and Indian Style filmi dancing is underway on the screen. The sequence has Dev Patel and Frieda Pinto dancing for the song 'Jai Ho' along with many other dancers in a Mumbai railway station. Interestingly enough, many Indians in the movie halls make preparations to leave while their American counterparts just don't want to leave. They end up dancing in the aisles. A slice of India welcomed in the United States in all earnest.
According to many Indians who are living in the United States, the film has brought about much pride amongst them especially because tremendous Indian talent is on display.
This weekend would be huge for 'Slumdog Millionaire' as the BAFTA Awards get underway. The film has been nominated in 11 categories. Let's hope A. R. Rahman and the rest of the team win many more awards.
One gets the feeling 'Slumdog Millionaire' has a date with the Oscars. We'll know if that is true on the 22nd of this month.

It's official: Trisha to pair Dhanush

Charming Trisha will pair with Dhanush for the very first time in the second venture of 'Polladhavan' director Vetri Maaran. The yet-to-be-named film will start shooting from the 22nd of this month in Madurai. Interestingly, Trisha would be playing a role which would be completely new to her. She plays a Madurai based Anglo Indian girl who eventually falls in love with a street smart 'loafer' Dhanush. A lot of effort is being made to bring out the authenticity of the characters. Apart from Trisha having to train as a pucca Madurai Anglo Indian, Dhanush too will appear in a never-seen-before appearance. The actor is currently preparing to be armed with the Madurai diction along with the necessary body language needed for the character. Though not much is known about the film, there are a few who say that the story is based on a real life incident that happened in Madurai decades ago. Vetri Maaran is known for his neat screenplay ability that brings about a stunning effect on audiences. If 'Polladhavan' stunned audiences narrating the story of a boy who finds his motorbike stolen, this new film is expected to have many twists and turns that have the potential to enthrall audiences. Not divulging much about the project, director Vetri Maaran said, 'Dhanush is a much bigger star now than he was when we worked for Polladhavan'. Would that also mean this new film would be much bigger than 'Polladhavan' Vetri Maaran?

Vikram’s shows singers the door

Not many knew Vikram could multitask - apart from the romance, fight and sentimental routines of his movies. Come Kanthaswamy, Vikram’s prowess in singing will be showcased for the world to see, oops hear, he has stretched his vocal chords for 4 songs, out of the 6 that are featured in the movie’s album.

It is learnt that musician Devi Sri Prasad was impressed with Vikram’s ability to sing, after he sang a few rough tracks during the film’s song composition in Malaysia. In less than a jiffy, it was decided that Vikram would sing 4 songs for the movie for his character. The songs, Mania, Poda Podi, Excuse Me Mr. Kanthaswamy and Kuchi Mittai are also recorded in Vikram’s voice in Telugu. Besides that producer Kalaipuli Dhanu also has plans to dub the movie into few international languages including Italian, English and Spanish. Now we have no clue if the international versions will have songs. And if they do, whether Vikram sings the versions is left to anybody’s imagination for now.
Kanthaswamy’s audio is slated to be released in March with the movie targeting for an April release.

However, sources have revealed that it’s a remake of Hindi film and the story is all about vengeance. If what they say is true, then the story goes this way….

According to reports, Asin got out of her car immediately and helped the child reach safely. While she tried to avoid speeding vehicles, she lost control and fell on the road sustaining bruises.

Rahman on 'Slumdog Millionaire' criticisms

The epitome of humbleness has finally opened up to vent out his opinion against the several brickbats that have been hurled at 'Slumdog Millionaire' over the past days.
A.R.Rahman, the winner of the prestigious Golden Globe and a strong contender for the upcoming Academy Awards said, "If creative people want to comment on a film, and if I were a director, I would make another film and prove my point and say this is what India is about".
Supporting the film the music wizard said that the only thing that mattered to him is that he felt so good and extremely positive after watching the film.
Rahman hailed the movie for depicting the reality and also beautifully showcasing the way Indian economy has grown over the years.
Praising director Danny Boyle, Rahman said that he loved the film maker's vision of the screenplay and the artistic quality of 'Slumdog Millionaire'.
Thinking in a broader perspective the composer added "For me it is not about India alone. It is about the human spirit which triumphs and this could have happened in China or Brazil or anywhere else".

Ganja Karuppu to wed soon

Comedian 'Ganja' Karuppu rose to stardom after playing a funny role in the Ameer film 'Ram'. He had earlier acted as a 'Ganja' smoker in the highly acclaimed film 'Pithamagan' that was directed by Bala. Hence the prefix to his name.
According to reports the comedian who is highly sought after is planning to marry soon. His relatives have chosen a girl from Theni to be his blushing bride. The bride herself is a relative of 'Ganja' Karuppu.
The reports also add that the comedian has recently purchased a four-storey bungalow in Adambakkam where he plans to move in after marriage. The bungalow has been christened 'Bala – Ameer Illam' – this is 'Ganja' Karuppu's way of thanking the directors for giving him a new life. 'Ganja' Karuppu was an office boy in Bala's office and his unique way of speech and body language prompted Bala and Ammer to try him out before the camera. It worked big time and 'Ganja' Karuppu has about fifteen projects under his belt.
The 'Grahapravesam' of the house would be held before the marriage. Way to go 'Ganja' Karuppu.

It's grave injustice: Nayantara

'Nayantara, who was issued a red card by the Tamil Film Producers Council and the South India Film Actors Association on Wednesday, has reportedly said she has been targeted and that grave injustice has been committed against her.
Nayantara was issued a ban at a joint meeting of the two bodies following a complaint lodged by Subash Chandra Bose, the producer of 'Paiya'. The extreme step was taken as Nayantara refused to return the advance amount she had received for 'Paiya'.
On the ban, she reportedly said, 'this is injustice and I never told Lingusamy that I am opting out of the film. I had received an amount of Rs 20 lakhs from him as advance for 'Paiya' and gave dates from September 2008'.
'This decision was taken without consulting me' Nayantara declared.
The dusky actress who is currently shooting for a Telugu film said, 'I asked Nadigar Sangam for help in order to sort out this matter and now they too have turned against me'.
Interestingly, the ban may not have any impact on Nayantara (at least for the time being) because she has reportedly committed movies in other languages and is expected to be busy with them till the end of this year.
However, the Producers Council has said in its statement that it would request the producers' associations in other languages to cooperate with them and not sign Nayantara for any further films.
I had to waste three months of my time waiting for 'Paiya' to begin. Unfortunately, it was postponed. Will they compensate my loss?' she asked.

The actor said that was drawn to Aeromodelling while still a student at the Asan Memorial School in 1983 when he was part of the NCC.

Shriya and Thamannah follow Nayanthara

Make it clear! Nayanthara never stepped into any gym for shedding her weight on the attempts of displaying Angeline Jolie looks.

The actress had instead dropped herself in her home town Kerala where through a surgery her fat contents were removed. In fact, her new physique was so illustrious that it was through a surgery she had gained such looks. Now, Thamannah and Shriya Charan are treading on the same paths. Both of them are sure about heading for the same mode of shedding their weight. Sources have revealed that they don't want Bollywood actresses with zero percent fat to be their competitors…
All the best Thamannah-Shriya! But don't be much alike Nayan. You know her results of shedding weight.

Sangeetha says 'No-Break' to acting

Quite clichéd when you hear actresses putting an end to their acting career soon after getting married.
Especially, it's more prevalent in South Indian Film Industry and Sangeetha wants to somewhat a different one. Recently married to playback singer Krish, the actress has said that she wouldn't be taking any break from tinsel town and would continue to act. At present, the couple has left for honeymoon and Krish too has decided to shore on the silver screen. Both of them were in love for sometime and got married with their parents' consent.

Jayamohan moves from Naan Kadavul to Ashokavanam

Naan Kadavul’s screenplay and dialogues are penned by the noted Tamil author Jayamohan. After being inspired by his hard-hitting screenplay, Bala decided that Jayamohan will write the dialogues of Naan Kadavul too. Jayamohan, however, begs to differ at the mere mention of the word dialogue. “We evolved upon conversations for the
movie that fits into the respective scene and not framed dialogues,” he stated in an interview to a tabloid.
Revealing a few tidbits about the movie, he mentioned that Arya and Pooja have perfected their roles for the movie. “I remember Bala insisting Arya and Pooja to remain in the costumes even after the shoots. This is to inculcate the character’s soul into the actors and I found it to be very effective,” he opined. He also recollected incidents when Arya, in public, was mistaken by other sanyasis as an Agori and was greeted with their salutation Ram Ram Maharaj. “Bham Bham Mahadev”, Arya would greet them back. “When I wrote the screenplay, I referred Arya’s character Rudhran to walk like an elephant when he was arrested by cops. And true to those words, I could feel Arya standing by the same,” he noted.
Jayamohan has now moved on to his mammoth book Ashokavanam, of 5000 pages. The book is close to being finished and will be published soon.

Kamal’s new fixation

Kamal has added a classy and expensive machine to his existing list of gadgets. A home theater, that is. The sleek equipment cost him 18 lakhs and would be installed at his home soon for his sheer viewing pleasure. For the world movie buff he is, Kamal is likely to have an enormous collection of movies in different languages. The brand,
specifications and other details, however, remain undisclosed.

Srikanth and Namitha – new judges for a TV show

A new game show named 'Boys vs Girls' is to air on Vijay TV and Srikanth and Namitha have been appointed as the judges for this show.
Designed to bring out the best out of participants (from both genders), the show is expected to hinge around the ever popular 'whose better' kind of rhetoric. Keeping that in mind, Namitha with her 'designer-style' broken Tamil might be successful in wooing viewers especially in this 'gender-fight' program. Srikanth on the other hand is known to be 'softer' with comments.
The show has many rounds such as Solo and Duet performances, Concept round, Betting round and more. That paves the way for a lot of involvement from the judges.

Icing on the cake for Vivek’s Padmashri

Not only the fans but Vivek himself is all excited about having been awarded the Padmashri by the Government of India. He is known for adding value to all his comedy scenes by conveying some need of the hour message to the society. He not only tickles our ribs to laughter but also infuses something into our grey matter to ignite our thought
processes along some social cause even after we calm down.
Vivek doesn’t attribute his enthusiasm to this prestigious award alone but confides that it is all the more because of the special appreciation he received from former Indian president Bharath Ratna Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam congratulating his achievement. Vivek has no words to express this special joy of a Double Dhamaka Crowning Glory.

Actress Amogha is ready for negative roles

Remember this missy! Amogha years back made her debut in Tamil film with ‘Jay Jay’ starring opposite Madhavan. With more of homely looks, she just grabbed everyone’s attention and then it was a surprising strike by her. Yeah! Hop-skipping into the Bollywood and Telugu Film Industry, the actress was sizzling with over-loaded glamour stuffs. Brimmed with the same style, she’s back in town of Kollywood with ‘Karthigai’ where she stars alongside Malavika.
The actress says, ‘It’s all about making it big in Tamil film industry and I’ve been rendering my best efforts on Karthigai’. When asked whether she is willing to take on negative roles, she says ‘Of course, I’m not worried about the kind of characterization. It’s all about how powerful that is and how far it would depict me differently from other films’

'Called off my project with Selvaraghavan' – Vishal

Vishal who is currently busy working for the film 'Thoranai' which is directed by Sabha Ayyapan has written in his blog that he has decided to call off his project with director Selvaraghavan.
Though no particular reason has been cited, Vishal wrote that it was a tough decision to make and justified it by saying 'I always believe in the films I take up right from day one and till the very end. I also put all my efforts into them irrespective of what the result would be at the end of it. Some kind of positive force would keep me going...but this time I felt otherwise ....wouldn't want to tell anything more. I hope to work with Selva sometime in the near future. I respect him as a director and I wish him all the best in his forthcoming movie'.
Vishal sounds very diplomatic here using the tone of a thorough professional. What really conspired for him to take a decision like this and that too with a reputed director like Selvaraghavan remains a mystery.
Speculation in the air suggests that the duration of the project might have been a concern for Vishal as Selvaraghavan is known to take at least a year to complete a film. Vishal is a rising star and that kind of timeframe might not help his career on the whole. Selvaraghavan’s ‘Idhu Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam’ which will have Dhanush and Andrea in lead roles however has been planned to be wrapped up fast. (Probably because it is their home production).

Koena Mitra gets her hips swaying in 'Ayan'

Koena Mitra seems to be making the right strides in becoming popular in Kollywood. The sensuous beauty from Bollywood has reportedly been roped in to do an item number in the Suriya starrer 'Ayan'.
According to sources, she agreed to shake her legs for a song in 'Ayan' after she was paid a huge sum. However reports say that she refuses to appear in item songs in Bollywood.
'Ayan', produced by AVM and presented by Sun Pictures, features Suriya and Tamanna in lead roles. Directed by K. V. Anand, the film has musical score by Harris Jayaraj. The songs are already topping the audio charts.

'Vennila…..' - a whiff of fresh air'

At a time when the global economic meltdown is threatening almost every business including big Kollywood films, here is a small film that comes across as a whiff of fresh air. Another tremendous piece of news for 'Vennila Kabbadi Kuzhu' is that the film stars debutants mostly. This has rejuvenated a lot of hopes in the industry.
'The success has proved that people are ready to welcome films that do not necessarily have big stars, grand sets or foreign locations. If a story is narrated in an interesting manner, it would reach the masses well', said a prominent producer.
'Vennila Kabbadi Kuzhu' was a not an experiment. Director Susindhran has narrated the story in a different manner – a tale of underdogs who have the determination to succeed. The backdrop of the film is Kabbadi and the electric feeling of fresh love. All other films that have released now are full of clichéd commercial elements that the audience are literally tired of', observed another.
No big stars, no popular names even in the technicians list, and yet the film has been successful in captivating audiences. Moreover, the film has given hopes to many youngsters who are still struggling to make a mark in Kollywood.

I know what I am doing: Sibiraj

Sibiraj, son of veteran actor Sathyaraj is currently playing a role with negative shades in a film titled 'Naanayam'. Prasanna stars in the film. When asked why he has decided to play villain, Sibiraj known for speaking straight just like his father said, 'I know where I stand and what should be done'.
The actor added, 'I have been flooded with questions as to why I have taken to playing a villain when my father is still acting as hero. Many even tried to brainwash me and said I should do only 'good' roles. I know what I am doing.'
Sibiraj is confident that his role in 'Naanayam' would be admired by everyone. I have a meaty role to play. It has come really good so far, he said.
At a time when many actors are hell bent on performing only 'good' roles on screen, here is an actor who has chosen a role because he feels he can do it well and thereby entertain audiences. This is a healthy sign and probably signals Sibiraj's coming of age as an actor. Let's hope Sibiraj comes out successful as an actor. That is more important than keeping an onscreen image going. Hats off Sibiraj.

Jayam Ravi emulates Dhool Vikram

As Peranmai nears completion we are hearing that the film will lack in one of the elements that is considered inevitable in a Tamil film; the duet. The film revolves around the exploits of a forest official (Jayam Ravi) who has to solve a fundamental issue that has been making the lives of people living in and around the forest very tough. Director Jananathan
seems to have thought that infusing a love duet into such a racy and turbulent script would not help matters and hence did away with it. However there are songs in the movie.
The highlight of the movie is itself said to be one song that was shot in Thalakonam. The song runs in the background as Jayam Ravi takes on a band of bad guys in the forest area. Sources say that the song is thrilling and that the fight has come out extremely well. If one’s memory is right, then the last time such a thing was attempted was in Dhool where Vikram went berserk with Paravai Muniamma’s voice going ‘Singam pola’ in the background. That was a huge plus for the movie, hope it turns out similarly successful for Jayam Ravi and Peranmai.

Thankar Bacchan’s frustration on Kollywood Actors

‘They’re fit to prefix titles of Thalapathy and Puyal to their names. But those are the real cheaters on whom the masses are laying their trusts on’ said Thankar Bacchan. It was on the occasion of Karthik Anitha audio launch that happened recently down here in Chennai. Thankar Bacchan, whose insatiable passion for Tamil and Tamilians is well known wanted to make a film on the present bleak scenario of pathetic Eelam Tamilians. Well, for the past 5 years, he has been approaching the most happening actors who yelled with spirit of Tamilian during the protest condemning the war in Sri Lanka, none of them were ready to perform the lead role.
Rathan who made his debut with ‘Kangalum Kavipaaduthey’ plays lead role in the film ‘Karthik Anitha’. The film has Manju from Kerala making her debut in female lead. Director Sri Hari, once an associate of Sundar C makes his debut directorial with this film.

Exciting projects for Trisha in 2009

Trisha is confident that 2009 would be a terrific year for her. The actress, who returned from a vacation in Australia, went over to Gujarat for shooting. She is part of the Telugu version of 'Abhiyum Naanum'.
She has a busy year lined up as she would be playing the leading lady in a host of films including one with Gautham Menon that is to star Silambarasan. Moreover she is also part of a Telugu film that stars Gopichand and Sathyaraj.
A thrilled Trisha said, ' I am happy with the response I received for 'Abhiyum Naanum'. One rarely gets an opportunity to play such roles.'
Though I have acted with Prakashraj earlier, this is the first time, we played father and daughter. Director Radha Mohan ensured it was realistic and entertaining', she added.
Asked whether Trisha would be the heroine in the Dhanush film directed by Vetri Maaran, the actress said, 'wait for a few more days for the official announcement. It is too early to comment'.
Trisha sure would be happy to be pairing with young heroes like Silambarasan and Dhanush as that would keep her morale of being a young chirpy girl going on screen.

Ban for Nayan from Tamil movies!!

In a interesting turn of events, Tamil film producers council and Nadigar sangam has banned Nayantara from acting in any further Tamil movies unless further announcement is made from the council. The ban has been a result of the actress walking out of the movie Paiyya, and following this she refused to return the advance of 25 lakhs paid by Subash Chandra Bose, the producer of Paiyya.
Directed by hit filmmaker N. Linguswamy, Paiyaa stars Paruthiveeran Karthi in the lead role and is produced by Subash Chandra Bose. Earlier the industry was abuzz with news that with the current economic conditions, director linguswamy wanted Nayan to take a pay cut but Nayantara decided to skip the movie. Tamanna stepped into the shoes of Nayan for the female lead of this movie.
The TFPC and Nadigar Sangam have conveyed to their members, the producers not to sign her for any future films. They have also requested producers of Telugu and Malayalam movies to not sign her in for any of their further projects!!

Mani seeks Ashokavanam from Kasthuriraja

While the works of Mani Ratnam’s Raavan / Ashokavanam are progressing quite well, it has come to light that Ashokavanam has not yet been finalized as the title of the Tamil version. However, Raavan faces no problem in Hindi. Ashokavanam was chosen because of the story’s source of inspiration, the epic Ramayana. But, another title ‘Ashokavanam 1 KM’
has already been registered under Kasthuriraja’s name though we are not sure about whether he is currently working on any project with this name.
Now, the Ashokavanam team plans to approach Kasthuriraja for permission to use the title. If Kasthuriraja feels that the title is not imperative to his plans for the future then Mani Ratnam’s film can be continued to be called Ashokavanam. Else, a change of title for the Tamil version will be required.
