Lakshmi Rai to take a break from Tamil films

Lakshmi Rai has become a red hot sensation after delivering two mega hits - Kanchana and Mankatha. Her negative role in Mankatha especially has made people sit up and take notice. There is a demand for the actress all of a sudden, but suddenly she is unavailable and says she cannot sign any new Tamil films for the moment.
The reason is simple. She has already committed her dates for films in Malayalam, Kannada, and Telugu and has to finish these projectss first before taking up any new ones. Besides, she feels the break will do her good as the fans will miss her and want more of her. Lakshmi Rai is definitely sitting pretty at the moment.

Prabhu Deva in 3D film?

Prabhu Deva has been a role model for dancers all over the country. Therefore it comes as no surprise that choreographer and director Remo D'Souza has admitted that he has been a huge fan of Prabhu Deva since when he was a teen and wants him in his film as the role was written with Prabhu Deva in mind. It is going to be a dance film made in the 3D format.

Suriya heroine goes topless!

Suriya's heroine in Maatran, Kajal Agarwal has posed topless for the cover of FHM magazine. This bold move has come as a huge shock to her South Indian fans because she has a demure and cute girl image here.
Apparently the homely image won't cut it in Bollywood where the leading heroines are expected to shed their clothes and be thoroughly uninhibited and Kajal has apparently followed this as she is desperate to make it big there.

Maddy, Arya & Lingu team for 'Raajneeti' remake?

It looks like the 'Vettai' trio, Madhavan aka Maddy, Arya and director Linguswamy might get together for another project. The project is said to go on board in Tamil with Madhavam, Arya, Bharath, Prakash Raj and Sathyaraj in the lead. The film in Hindi was compared to the lines of Mahabharatha and portrays what one can do or is tempted to do for power.
If the film goes on board it will be Maddy's third film with Lingu and a political drama which will sure create much hype and sensation.

Chiyan Vikram's Film Karikalan in Trouble?

Vikram’s next big film ‘Karikalan’ created ripples when those eye catchy pictures portraying Vikram as a Warrior King were released recently, and it had wide appreciations for its concept and colour! Critics and other fans predicted that the film would also come as a neat production like the beautiful pictures.

But, contrary to the happy beginning the film is now in a trouble that writer A R Gandhikrishna, who did ‘Chellame’ and ‘Anandha Thaandavam’, is now complaining that his name was not there in the credits of the promotional stills of the film in spite of him being the original writer of the story and the script.

“I was introduced to L I Kannan, the director of ‘Karikalan’, and the one-liner of the story was told to him by me. I also wrote the whole script as an official writer of the film when the director and producer asked me to write. Now they have blackened my name by not mentioning my name and giving credit to me in the promotional pictures”, says the angry writer-director.

But, the director has his version of the controversy and he says, “As a senior writer-director he was consulted by me and my team in writing the script. He cannot claim for the whole script when he had only given some suggestions!” The film is a story of the legendary king Karikala Cholan. The film is directed by debut director L I Kannan and features ‘Chiyan’ Vikram as the warrior king. New faces Zarine Khan, Mitra Kurien and Radhika Apte are the three actresses who are going to do the three leading ladies role.

'Engeyum Eppodhum' bags a clean 'U'

Saravanan, the director of 'Engeyum Eppodhum' is a happy man, the reason is his film bagging a clean 'U' tag from the censor board today. This is Saravanan's first stint as a director and this film pans the life of two couples. 'Engeyum Eppodhum' sees Jai, Anjali, Ananya and Shravanand essaying lead roles.

Sathya is in charge of the music and the music album of this film which hit the stands recently is doing quite well. There are five songs in all, with lyricist Na Muthukumar and the debutant director penning the songs between them.

'Engeyum Eppodhum' has also confirmed its slot for release on September 16. The film is jointly produced by AR Murugadoss and Fox Studios. This is the 'Ghajini' director's first venture into production that too for a film which sees his associate in the director's seat. Most of the film has been shot with Chennai and Trichi as the backdrop!

Mankatha to take Andhra by storm

Given the record opening Mankatha has enjoyed at the box office, it is not surprising that the decision has been made to dub and release it in Telugu. The film will be titled Gambler and is slotted for release on September 9th. Recently a number of films that have been dubbed in Telugu like Rangam (Ko), Na Peru Siva (Naan Mahan Alla), etc have done fantastic business, so in trade circles it is generally opined that there is a big market for Tamil films in AP.
Producer, Bellamkonda Suresh who has a lot of experience has decided to release Mankatha in Telugu. The music is already a rage and the film had created the same feverish buzz there which explains why it has been decided to release it in more than 220 screens which is on par with a regular Telugu film. Mankatha is following closely on Enthiran's heels and if it continues pulling in audiences at the same right it just might set a new record.

STR in another remake?

Silambarasan watched Delhi Belly recently and laughed so hard his sides hurt! When the suggestion to remake the film came up, STR was very keen on doing it we hear. It is a Bollywood film that had Imran Khan in a pivotal role. What set the film apart was its liberal dose of toilet humor and its expletive - ridden narrative.
One wonders whether the Tamil film audience might be game for this coming of age film. Even so, word is that the Tamil remake of Delhi Belly will be modified and watered down in order to suit Tamil tastes. Aamir Khan, the producer of the Hindi version has let slip that some production houses are interested in buying the rights to the film so negotiations are going on currently to seal the deal.

Jiiva - Samantha's 'Neethane En Ponvasantham' - First Look

The masks were unveiled at last. The advertisements of 'Neethane En Ponvasantham' on leading newspapers for the past few days, that featured a young pair, are that of Gautham Vasudev Menon's forthcoming film, featuring Jiiva and Samantha in lead roles.

Remember Gautham adopted a similar tactic before launching 'Vinnaithandi Varuvaya' too. This is his style of creating a buzz over the film and then revealing its details to the masses.

The movie was earlier titled 'Nithya' and it has now been rechristened as 'Neethane En Ponvasantham'. Kumar and Jayaram of RS Infotainment will present this film produced by Photon Kathas Production.

Jiiva plays 21-year-old Raghu, an engineering student, while Samantha plays Nithya, a 20-year-old psychology student. "Jiiva has hit the gym to get the shape and style of a college student," sources add. And we can see him with a different hair style as well. The tag line, "This could be your love story", has caught the attention of one and all and fans are expecting the film to be a visual treat and a breezy romantic film like VTV.

'Vedi' not for Deepavali

Vishal's next 'Vedi' will not hit the screens for Deepavali as expected. Instead, it would see the light of the day almost a month before the day of lights. This has been confirmed by none other than Vishal himself.

Talking to journalists in Chennai Saturday night, the actor said that the film would be released by the end of September. "Producer Vikram Krishna has been tirelessly working for Vedi's release this month," he said.

Prabhudeva, who had helmed the film, expressed confidence that it would work big time in the box office. "Though it is inspired by a Telugu movie ('Souryam'), we have made many changes to the screenplay," he said.

Throwing light on the storyline, the director said that 'Vedi' is about the protagonist's search for a particular thing. "What is he searching for and how his search comes to an end is the crux of the film," Prabhudeva added. Music composer Vijay Antony and heroine Sameera Reddy also spoke at the event.

I am not God: Vijay

Vijay has expressed displeasure on a section of his fans who depicted him as God in posters, during the audio launch of 'Velayudham' in Madurai recently. "I am upset with this act," said the Ilayathalapathy.

"I am totally against the practice of showcasing a man as God. A human being can never become God. I request my fans to immediately stop this act. I hope that they would pay heed to my request," he said.

In a statement to the media, Vijay said, "When the issue was brought to my notice during the audio launch of Velayudham, I immediately asked them to remove the posters and my fans did it. But a few miscreants are creating an issue out of it."

He added: "I also don't discriminate people based on their caste and religion. I have friends, fans, well-wishers and workers from different communities and I respect them all equally. We are human beings and Tamilians," he said.

Simbhu says that he saw Mankatha standing up

Actor Simbhu is an ardent fan of Ajith. He himself has mentioned this many times. Simbhu has the habit of watching Ajith films on the first day itself that too in the theatres along with the audience. Similarly he wanted to see the movie Mankatha.

The shooting of Osthi is taking place for the last few days in Mysore. He requested director Dharani that he wanted to see Mankatha on the first day itself in Chennai. Dharani has also permitted him. So Simbhu flew immediately to Chennai and watched the film along with the audience at Sathyam Theatre.
After the show was over, he wanted to see the film for second time but he could not get tickets. Because of this he saw the whole film once again standing in a corner. Simbhu while speaking about this said, "I was waiting for the release of Mankatha. I use to get news updates about Mankatha from my friends when I was in Mysore. I saw the morning show. But I did not get tickets for the next show. Because of this I watched the whole film standing.
I enjoyed every scene. I whistled. When he spoke punch dialogues I jumped. Right from my younger days, I will get very emotional if I see Ajith’s films."

Madhu Shalini to don the Don role in RAM Gopal Varma’s film

Telugu actress Madhu Shalini has acted in few Tamil films including Pathinaaru and Avan Ivan. Now she is debuting in Hindi through the film Department to be directed by Ram Gopal Varma. Madhu Shalini while speaking about this said, "In this film I am sharing the screen with Amitabh Bachchan and Raana.

Though the story is about the don and police, it will not be the usual film. I am donning the role of a woman underworld don. On one side I will be very peaceful and on the other side I will be a terror.
So far I have not acted in this kind of role. Because of this I am eagerly waiting for the day to act in this role. After Pathinaaru I got lots of offers in Tamil. But I was waiting for a good role. Then I got the opportunity to act in Avan Ivan directed by Bala. Through this film I was introduced throughout Tamil Nadu. By working in Bala’s film, I have learnt lots of nuances about acting. I hope this will be useful in my career. I made my debut as actress in a Telugu film. Many are asking me that why I am not continuing to act there. I got offers which were stereo typed. Because of this I avoided them. I want to act in challenging roles. I am ready to act in any language if I get this kind of roles."

The actress who gave Ajith the title of super star

Ajith Kumar has always been referred earlier as Ultimate Star. Now a new face actress has become a great fan of Ajith that also after seeing Mankatha.
She after seeing Mankatha said, "I have just returned after seeing Mankatha. Ajith sir has stolen my heart. His acting in Mankatha is fabulous. His acting is still running in my mind. He is the real super star. Kindly excuse me Salman Khan sir. Right from now onwards I have become a wholesome fan of Ajith."
Are you asking who that actress is? She is none other Piya who had acted in Ko.

Prabhu Deva to do the lead role in a Bollywood film

Prabhu Deva is going to don the lead role in a Hindi film related to dance. This film is to be directed by the popular choreographer Remo D’Souza. Director Remo while speaking about this film said, " I am a great fan of Prabhu Deva’s dancing from right from my young age.
I have written story keeping Prabhu Deva in mind. In Hollywood, films related to dancing like Step Up are being made. This film will also be like the Hollywood film. No one else except Prabhu Deva can act in this kind of film.
So I spoke to him about this project. We have planned to commence the shooting by end of this year. UTV Motion Pictures is producing this film. The Hollywood film Step Up has been made in 3 parts. Efforts are being taken to make Hollywood actresses Sharni Vinson and Briana Evigan who have acted in Step Up to do the female lead roles in my Hindi film." When asked Prabhu Deva about this he said, " It is true that we have spoken about this film. Only once the meeting has taken place. Nothing else has been finalized."

Braveheart Ajith and the fitting fifty!

At a time when movie buffs are being inebriated with the ecstasy of Ajith’s golden jubilee film Mankatha, one cannot but start thinking of the brave move of the handsome star for it needs real gumption to choose a role for his landmark film that defies all the templates that have been created hitherto in the Tamil (or may be Indian) film industry for heroes.

All along, whenever we had heroes doing an antagonist’s role, there were a few rules that were strictly adhered to. Primarily, the hero portraying the anti-hero material would surely have been affected with a serious psychological disorder, may be in younger years, which would be responsible for the indelible effect on his psyche and he would need help and attention to combat this aberration. A good example would be Kamal in Sigappu Rojakkal. A compelling reason for the non-valorous behavior indeed! But for this anomaly, the hero would be an epitome of all things good!
Secondly when the hero swindles money from the ‘have’s, it is only to distribute to the ‘have not’s for flooding them with healthcare, education and other humanely services to ensure that the hero is always immaculately blemish free because he is a HERO! And his Robinhood act is only to protect and save his fellow brethren in need. And till he breathes his last, his being is only for his compatriots. Gentleman Arjun is a perfect example whose actions need only eulogizing and nothing less than that!

Thirdly if the hero had to do all the antonym acts, then there would be an over build up of his character wherein he would be portrayed as a machismo who would rip apart all the baddies of the world with just a twitch in his biceps that would race to his knuckles in the blink of a well curled ‘mascara’ed eyelash and we have umpteen movies as testimony to this.

Quite refreshingly and much to the jubilance of filmphiles, none of the aforementioned features are not even remotely being expressed in the character of Vinayak Mahadev of Mankatha, scripted by Venkat Prabhu.

To put it simply, Vinayak Mahadev is someone who loves MONEY MONEY and MONEY. Nothing else! Nothing else can deter him in this pursuit, not even the gorgeous Trisha! The psyche of Vinayak Mahadev has not been landscaped into all things beautiful and virtuous and he stands before you in all his purity (!). This is a case of simple and straightforward portrayal, no distractions anywhere. This man wants money. And would do anything to get it. And we all know the world abounds in such characters and hence much relatable too!

Completely uncaring about something called image, Ajith unabashedly boozes, smokes, canoodles, lies to his lady love, sports a salt and pepper look with a slight paunch, mouths expletives with venom and he does all this sans a slightest iota of remorse because that is his way of life (on screen).

Ajith’s performance in Mankatha leads to a surmise that the potential of such an explosive actor had been royally squandered by directors (there could be few exceptions) in the past who had nothing else to show of him but slow motion shots of the debonair actor walking up and down in immaculate suits and designer shades. And, mind you, there were lots of people who doubted his dialogue delivering abilities but Mankatha proves them all wrong.

And now with Mankatha, it is evident that Ajith has completely come out of his old garb and has shown absolutely no trepidations to essay such a Kafkaesque portrayal despite the film being a milestone in his two decade long career in the world of gloss and glory.

Cut to the real life, Ajith has come across as someone who is honest and forthright, qualities that are quite rare in the world that we inhabit. He is famous for his politically incorrect statements and is known to speak his mind courageously without any embellishments whatsoever. We have seen him stand up for his principles during a felicitation meet of the former CM seeking his help to artists who did not want to be dragged into such events. In an industry which thrives on fan clubs and fans, he was gutsy enough to disband them overnight, an act which is simply unfathomable in a normal context.
Therefore it certainly does not come as a surprise that Ajith chose to do Vinayak Mahadev of Mankatha without vacillation because it is after all a character that he is playing and he did not mind about the ‘heroic’ image. To quote his stance from the film, “Naan evvaLuvu naaL daan nallavana nadikkaradu”. He just wanted to do a role that was different and exciting. And looking at the film, anybody would see that Ajith has had a field day playing Vinayak Mahadev. A job well-done Ajith!

On a signing off note; if all our heroes shred their so called image to take on such roles and entertain, movie buffs would do a rambunctious jig and would simply say MANKATHA da!

The mood in the country is clearly against corruption now and producer AM Rathnam who made Indian with Shankar and Kamal Haasan feels that the time is right for a sequel. Shankar said that it was touching that people were referring to Anna Hazare as Indian Thatha a character which he had created.
The director remains undecided about the sequel however and said that right now Nanban is taking up all his time and effort. After Nanban is done, he will think about his next project. About Vijay, Shankar has nothing but words of praise and says that his character is one for all the ages and everyone is going to love him.

The Bollywood superstar loved the script and felt that it suited him to the letter.
After wrapping up Suriya's 7am Arivu, Murugadoss will begin work on his film with Vijay which is slotted for a 2012 release and then the Akshay Kumar project will go on floors.

Ananya wanted to become a journo, says her mother

The mightily talented actress Ananya wanted to become a journalist in her life, her mother has revealed. Ananya, made a stunning debut in actor-director Sasikumar’s ‘Nadodigal’. She played Sasikumar’s heroine and earned many accolades for her portrayal of her character without any fuss. Her bubbly attitude and chirpy acting earned her many fans.

Ananya then had another release in ‘Seedan’, a film in which actor Dhanush played a significant role. She is presently looking forward to her big release, a film produced by director Murugadoss’ home production in association with Hollywood’s Fox Star Studios and titled ‘Engeyum Eppodhum’. Ananya pairs up opposite Sharvanand (of ‘Kaadhalna Summa Illai’ fame). Jai and Anjali are the other lead actors in the film.
Ananya is presently starring in a handful of films in Tamail and Malayalam. Piracita, the actress’ mother, has said that becoming a journalist in real life was always the ambition of her daughter. “While she was a school student, she was very much interested in music but somehow lost interest in music when she started going to college where she pursued her graduation in Communication discipline.
“She then aspired to become a journalist. This, however, didn’t materialize as she has taken to acting. She is at liberty to pursue whatever she wanted. She has now told us that she might indulge in direction in future. As I said, she can do whatever she wants,” concludes Ananya’s mother.

Venkat Prabhu, the Mottai Boss

Venkat Prabhu is a very happy man. His film with Ajith Mankath has taken a record opening and looks all set to smash a few box office records atleast. The director went to Tirupati, walked up the hill and had his head tonsured as an offering to Lord Venkateshwara. He is an ardent devotee and prays there regularly. Prior to the release of the film he had prayed for its success there.

Now that Mankatha has done well, Venkat Prabhu felt that thanks were due to the deity. He is now the new Motta Boss! And as a director, Venkat Prabhu has had 3 out of 4 films deemed super successful and that is an enviable track record indeed. So he really is the boss!

Prabhu-Nayan deny ‘secret’ marriage, to wed this month

A few days back, the Telugu and Tamil media was abuzz with reports that actress Nayantara and Prabhu deva had ‘secretly’ married in Mumbai. The reason given for Prabhu’s un-publicized wedding was that Prabhu deva was apprehensive of the ‘reaction’ of his grown-up kids through his first wife Ramalat on seeing the invitation of their father’s ‘re-marriage’.
The duo has now announced that they are likely to wed sometime this month, denying that the marriage had already taken place ‘secretly’. Prabhu deva parted ways with Ramalat, his wife of 15 years, after developing a ‘soft corner’ for actress Nayantara during the making of his directorial venture ‘Villu’ in which she played the heroine opposite Vijay. The ‘soft corner’ was due to the fact that Nayan had just ended her stormy relationship with actor Simbu.
Ramalat opposed the marriage tooth and nail but was pacified by Prabhu deva who agreed to part away with huge sums of cash and property to get Ramalat agreed to a mutual divorce. The Family Court in Chennai granted the divorce a couple of months back, freeing Prabhu deva from whatever matrimonial bond he had with Ramalat. Later, Nayantara embraced Hinduism at Chennai’s Arjaya Samaj to get married to Prabhu as per Hindu rituals.
It is now informed that the marriage would be held in the second fortnight of September and that the venue would either be Mumbai or Hyderabad. The marriage would be a grand affair, it is learnt.
