National Awards: Top honours for South Cinema


The 55th National Awards was announced for the year 2007 and it was Priyadarshan directed Tamil movie Kancheevaram which bagged the Best Feature Film and Best Actor Award went to Prakash Raj for Kancheevaram. Also Best Director award went for Malayalam film Nallu Pennungal while Umashree bagged Best Actress for her portrayal in the Kannada film Gulabi Talkies.The best special effects award was won by Sivaji directed by Shankar.
Prakash Raj was ecstatic about winning the Best Actor Award even though he has previously won the Best Supporting Actor award for ‘Iruvar’ in 1998 and a Special Jury Award in 2003, but this is his first award in the Best Actor category.

Prakash Raj is a pupil from the school of noted Tamil film maker K Balachander, and was introduced in Tamil film as villain in “Duet” and later acted in several of Balchander’s films.
Anil Kapoor’s production Gandhi My Father bagged three awards for Best Screenplay (Feroz Abbas Khan), Best Supporting Actor (Darshan Jariwala) and even won the Special Jury award. Aamir Khan’s directorial debut Taare Zameen Par won awards for Shankar Mahadevan (Best Male Playback Singer) and Prasoon Joshi (Best Lyrics) for the song ‘Maa’ and also bagged the Best Film on Family Welfare award.
Shah Rukh Khan’s Chak De India won the Best Film for providing overall entertainment, while his Om Shanthi Om bagged the award for Best Art Directon(Sabu Cyril). Shahid- Kareena smash-hit Jab We Met which is now being remade as Kandien Kadhalai has also bagged two awards for Best Choreography and Best Female Playback Singer (Shreya Ghoshal).
