A. R. Rahman speaks on 'Marma Yogi'


'Marma Yogi', a mega-budget project set in the sixth century A.D. will bring Kamal Haasan and A. R. Rahman together after a gap of almost eight years. The last time Rahman scored music for a Kamal film was Thenali.
'It is very early to comment on the film but what I can say now is that I will do a bit of research, since this is a period film,' he says.
And how about working in an animation film – Sultan, The Warrior? 'It is exciting, no doubt. It offers endless scope,' he puts it succinctly. Directed by Soundarya, daughter of Rajinikanth, the 3-D animation flick will feature the superstar as a mythological, larger than life hero. The multi-lingual film is being made in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
Rahman has no intentions on working only for big banners. 'I would work in ventures where the focus is concentrated on music. That was the case with 'Sakkarakatti'. I am pleased the songs have gone down well with the audience'.

There's no stopping Nayantara


Despite the fact that Nayantara's last two ventures 'Kuselan' and 'Satyam' could not pass muster at the box office, the going seems great for dusky siren.
The sought-after heroine of Tamil and Telugu Cinema will now share the screen with celebrity brothers. Nayantara will romance Suriya and his brother Karthi in two different ventures.
The film in which she will act opposite the 'Paruthiveeran hero' will be directed by Lingusamy. The project is expected to go to the floors in October.
Meanwhile, the Suriya-Nayantara venture, which is to be directed by K S Ravikumar, will start once the director completes 'Jaggubhai' and the actor completes 'Ayan'.

Arjun and his big plans

'Action king' Arjun is planning to direct a bilingual flick in Hindi and Tamil. He would play the hero in both versions. 'I should begin work on the project by this year end', he says.
He is presently working on two projects – 'Tiruvannamalai' and 'Durai'. The actor says that both the scripts have all the ingredients to satisfy his fans.
'Also, the films are directed by two very good directors, Perarasu and Venkatesh respectively. I normally work on one-film-at-a-time basis. But since both the storylines impressed me, I agreed to do both simultaneously,' he says.
I am gifted, because people have accepted my brand of films. A good storyline with the right mix of action, sentiments and comedy clicks at the box-office, he says.
On acting, producing and directing films, the filmmaker says, 'My passion for cinema urges me to explore various facets of filmmaking. I like to wield the megaphone since it is a creative job. The director is the captain of the ship and must shoulder responsibility. I enjoy every bit of it. Some subjects interest me so much that I go on to produce the film. After all, I want to be associated with good cinema in any capacity.'

Simbu steals one from Rajini


Scores of yesteryear popular chartbusters are being remixed these days. Joining the long list is 'Vachukava Unnai Mattum' a very popular song from Rajinikanth's hit film 'Nallavanukku Nallavan'.
Music composer Dhina has remixed the song for Silambarasan's 'Silambattam'. Moreover, the actor has crooned the song himself. This being a peppy number, it was shot featuring a large number of dancers recently.
'Silambattam' is fast nearing completion and would hit the screens very soon. Meanwhile, after completing 'Silambattam', Simbu will start shooting for 'Poda Podi', which is to be shot extensively in Canada. Sarath Kumar's daughter Varalaxmi plays his heroine.

Kuselan creator banned!

The Kerala Producers Association has issued an ultimatum to producers of Malayalam movies not to engage director and actor Srinivasan in their movies. This comes in the wake of a complaint lodged by producer Vindhyan, alleging that Srinivasan has not directed a movie for him, as promised, for which he took an advance of Rs. 5 lakh in the year 1998,
nor has he returned the cash.
Vindhyan, however was diplomatic when questioned about this turn of events. He told the presspersons that Srinivasan is one of his close friends but he had no other choice other than to lodge a complaint since the money was overdue for more than 10 years now. “I am hoping to solve this issue amicably,” he added further.
As is known, Srinivasan is the writer and director of the Malayalam super hit Kadha Parayumbol which was later remade into Kuselan, released recently

Jeeva and Srikanth to pair up for Mani’s assistant


This seems to be the season of India’s numero uno director Mani Ratnam’s fledglings to set foot in the tinsel town and prove their talent. Earlier in the week, Kannan, who apprenticed with Mani earned appreciation for his work in Jeyamkondaan and now another associate Sudha is slated to wield the megaphone for Drogi to be produced
by Mano Akkineni, the granddaughter of the late veteran L V Prasad.
This film is said to be a double hero subject where Jeeva and Srikanth are roped in to essay the lead roles. One of their arm candies will be Poorna of Muniyandi Moondram Aandu Vilangiyal fame. After her first project, this young lady has signed on the dotted line for Kodaikanal and Adigaram. There is also a buzz in the industry that the title Drogi may change.

Now he has teamed up with Pasupathy in Vedigundu Murugesan and the duo is expected to bring the roof down with their comedy antics. According to director Murthy, their comedy scenes are going to be the talk of the town when the film hits the screens. While talking about the film, Murthy says, “Vedigundu Murugesan is almost complete but for a couple of days of shooting”. He also adds that Vadivelu is called Alert Arumugam in the film and that his role will be very different from his earlier films. He will have special set of punch dialogues in this movie which will be ‘annan velatta ninnalum alerta iruppanda’, ‘Urangina oru mugam, urumina aaru mugam’ etc.

Talakona Forests captivates 'Jaganmohini'

Jaganmohini is a remake of the yesteryear classic Jaganmohini (1978), directed by Vitallacharya, starring Narasimha Raju and Jayamalini in the lead roles. The newer version is being directed by N.K. Viswanathan starring Raja and Namitha. The movie is produced by by H. Murali. The unit of the new version of 'Jagan Mohini' has completed a part of the shooting schedule in the thick forests of Talakona. The unit including the lead Namitha camped at the dense jungle to capture various shots at the scenic spots of the forest. The civilians of the surrounding villages stormed to see the actor, after the news of their camping reached. The upcoming schedule for the shooting is to take place at Vizag and then in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by the end of September. The climactic scenes of the movie are going to be shot in the exquisite islands of Andaman and Nicobar. The film is planned to be completed by December and released in January 2009. The yesteryear hero of 'Jaganmohini', Narasimha Raju is stars as the father of the new lead Raja. The role of Jayamalini is restated by Namitha, who sizzles in the role of a glamorous heroine. Nila who is widely known as Meera Chopra in Tollywood makes a reversion in to the tamil industry but as a second heroine this time. The scene in which the nymphet Namitha harvests pearls underwater is claimed as the major high spot by the film makers. The unit says that the actress underwent special coaching for this scene. The puja was held at Tirumalai Nayak Palace, Madurai. Music maestro Ilayaraja visited the shooting spot of 'Jaganmohini', probably for the first time who scores music for this movie.
